Class Experience

US Grade 4
In this fifteen week course, "Math Detectives" will review a variety of 4th grade math skills while working together to unlock a series of clues to solve a riddle.  

This course allows students to review math skills in a fun format as they solve a series of math riddles that work together to unlock clues to solve a specific "crime" that has been committed. 

Skills Reviewed:
Continuing patterns
Beginning Multiplication and Division
Geometry - 2D and 3D shapes
Measurement including Area and Perimeter
Place Value and ways to write numbers
Rounding
Time and Money
Fractions
 
*Please make sure your learner has some knowledge of these skills prior to coming to this class. 

Class time frame will be as follows: 
Welcome / Introduction: 5 minutes
Introduction of riddle/crime through video and discussion: 5 minutes
Instructions to solve riddle: 3 minutes
Group work on solving clues: 45 minutes
(students will take turns solving math problems guided by teacher to solve riddles and clues)
Discuss solution/Wrap-up/ Good-byes: 2 minutes

In this semester course, "Math Detectives" will review a variety of 5th grade math skills while working together to unlock a series of clues to solve a riddle.

This course allows students to review math skills in a fun format as they solve a series of math riddles that work together to unlock clues to solve a specific "crime" that has been committed.   Guidance is given if a student needs extra support in a skill, and all students work together in a structured classroom as a team to solve each riddle and to work the math problems.

Learning Goals

The students will review a variety of 4th grade math skills in this class to practice what they are learning in the classroom.  The class is set up in a fun problem solving way so that the learners do not feel overwhelmed, but enjoy themselves as they refresh their memory of math skills and also work together in a group to solve math riddles and problems.

Supply List
Students may benefit from a piece of paper and pencil to work out a few problems.  If they do not have access to these, we can still do the work together on the screen.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Over the past few years I have worked really hard to bring back the JOY in learning and to show the kiddos that learning can be fun.
