Homework
1 hour per week. After we've gone through the book together, it'll be helpful for them to read it at home throughout the week. The more often a child reads, the better their comprehension develops overall.Assessment
As the weeks progress, I will informally assess the learner’s reading comprehension, fluency and vocabulary development. If a care-giver would like, I may also formally assess the learner’s progress.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
**Learners will need to know how to read at at least a late-first grade level—basic phonics and sight words needed.** In these 1:1 tutoring sessions, I will support young readers in their early reading journey, using enjoyable “easy reader” books. We'll focus on reading fluency and comprehension, while also developing critical thinking skills. The books are are not “phonics readers.” They are either full storybooks with engaging storylines and illustrations or well-crafted, illustrated nonfiction books. I will assess where the learner is at the beginning of the first lesson. I will use a few different leveled Early Readers or Spectrum Workbooks. This way, we’ll begin right at a level that works best for the learner. (This is a similar assessment I used as a first grade teacher.) Next, I will introduce the first book that we’ll read together. Each lesson will include both nonfiction and fiction. This is where the lessons will differ depending on the learner’s needs. We may look through the pictures first and then read together. I may read the book aloud first while the learner follows along. We may go through the book and find words the learner knows. It depends on what the learner needs. I will help the learner by providing mini-lessons in phonics or sight words, echo-reading, repeated reading together, verbal support and encouragement while reading. I will also model fluent reading. The books will also support the learner by providing them with an engaging story or informational text. Each session will have a short introduction of unfamiliar words in the book, a guided reading session and a short discussion about the book at the end. Depending on the learner, I may also incorporate writing: single words, main idea & details, summarizing facts, retelling the story, etc.
