Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
In these 1:1 tutoring sessions, the learner and I will work together to write a story or essay. They story or essay may be for the learner’s personal enjoyment, school or a contest. The learner will have the ideas, and I’ll do the leg-work to type it.

A sample session:
We’ll use a brainstorming graphic organizer that we both can see & modify.
It may be about character development: what the character looks like, thinks, believes, enjoys, dislikes, etc.
Then, we may do the same with setting ideas or plot.
Then, they may start telling the story.
(This is a first draft, so it won’t be pretty.)
We’ll get as many words down as possible. I’m typing while they dictate their story.

In the next lesson, we will continue writing or begin brainstorming a new story or essay. It all depends on the learners’ wants and needs.

The topics covered may include:

~Basic English grammar, spelling and sentence structure.
~The steps of the writing process: brainstorming and planning, editing, revising, and finishing a piece. We will circle back to a step if necessary.
~Story elements: Characters, setting, plot, problems and solutions.
~Academic essay elements: Introduction, thesis, supporting details, summary, conclusion, etc…

This class will be both teacher and student-led. It will involve a lot of verbal communication between the learner and me and some writing or drawing on the learner’s part.

The learners will need to be prepared to share their ideas and be asked questions and given feedback.

The goal is to have a short story or essay completed in a few weeks.
Learning Goals
Learners will discover that their ideas can become “real," even if they aren't able to write or type yet.

Learners will become more fluent and confident in conversation skills such as active listening, affirming another’s comments, and receiving critique and encouragement.

Learners will become more confident and fluent in reading aloud.

Learners will develop critical thinking skills by considering and sharing their own ideas, as well as considering others’ ideas.

Learners will better understand how essays and stories are developed from one's own mind.

Learners will better understand how published works are created, including brainstorming, collaboration, editing and rewriting, etc.
