Homework
1 hour per week. I will send home a word list to review with your learner. These words are the specific tricky words that the learner should review at home to improve mastery. Your child should read the list of words in isolation and within the story at the end of the review sheet.
Progress Report
After each class, I will send you a phonics focus form. This form shows which phonics skills the student should focus on for the week based on the data I collected in the previous classes, with specific words to review.

Class Experience

US Grade 1
Beginner Level
Let's develop a good foundation in reading!
This class is perfect for learners who are just beginning their reading journey. We will read simple sentences such as "Pop got on the mat." This class is great for kids who are just starting to read simple words on their own. If they need more challenge, I will adjust the lesson based on their reading ability.
We will focus on phonemic awareness and phonics skills in a fun and engaging way. By the end of each class, the learner will read a decodable book with help from the teacher.

Here's what we cover:
* Phonemic awareness (isolating first, middle, and last sounds; rhymes)
* Synthetic phonics
* Decoding techniques
* Sight words
* Vocabulary

Class structure:
We will start by reviewing phonemes, focusing on voiced and unvoiced sounds. We will listen to words and practice identifying the individual phonemes in the word. We will listen for rhyming words. We will clap the syllables in a word. We will play with words by adding, deleting, or substituting sounds to make new words. We will then practice sight words. We will review some vocabulary words by looking at both the pronunciation and meaning. Finally, we will put our skills to the test by reading a short story.

My teaching style:
I use the Science of Reading approach and the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading. I will use colorful and playful animations on the screen to guide the students through the activities. I believe students learn even quicker while using their hands so that they can follow along with my hand movements. They can also draw on the screen if they know how to use the Zoom annotate feature.

Learner interaction:
Students will have 1-on-1 interactions with me so they can ask questions and share their ideas at any time in class.

Required knowledge:
None required
