You can play Minecraft (bedrock edition) while learning grammar! We will learn about a new part of speech in each class. After the on-screen grammar lesson, we can all play together in a private realm. The teacher will serve as a moderator during class ensuring gameplay is kept appropriate and all learners can share and participate. You will need to allow your child to enable multiplayer on Minecraft to join the realm. ~What will be taught? Each week, we will learn a new grammar concept and look at multiple examples. Then, we will play Minecraft together in a secure and private realm. Each learner will have time to complete a challenge where they can use their grammar knowledge while in Minecraft. When they complete their challenge, they will answer questions about what they learned. Once they answer correctly, they will have free play time at the end of the lesson. We will practice collaborative play and social skills. ~What topics will you cover? * 8 Parts of Speech (noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, articles) ~How is your class structured? 10 mins - grammar lesson --> Direct instruction on the grammar concept 10 mins - Minecraft challenge --> Students complete challenges reinforcing what we learned --> Students are quizzed within the game and are provided with immediate feedback 5 mins - Free play in our village After class --> Students complete a Google form quiz ~How will you teach? * Direct instruction on-screen and also guided instruction within the Minecraft game. ~What's your teaching style? * I like to follow the teaching model "I do -- We do -- You do". So I will show the concept to the students first. Then I will ask them to begin trying to use their new knowledge or skill. Finally, I ask the learners to do it themselves. I will ask the student to demonstrate what they learned by discussing the grammar concept and showing their finished build. ~How much will learners get to interact with you and each other? * I will call on each learner during the grammar lesson so that each learner can participate. While in Minecraft, the learners can talk with each other via our Zoom call. I will double-check with each learner to ensure they understand the grammar concept for the day and can answer the quiz questions correctly. SCHEDULE: 6/2: Nouns 6/9: Pronouns 6/16: Verbs 6/23: Adjectives 6/30: Adverbs 7/7: Prepositions 7/14: *NO CLASS* 7/21: Conjunctions 7/28: Interjections 8/4: Types of nouns 8/11: Past-tense verbs END OF THE SUMMER SEMESTER This class will end on August 11th. How To Join the Minecraft Realm: 1. Send me your Gamertag in a private message on Outschool. I will add you as a friend. (Your Xbox privacy settings should be set to allow "you can add friends".) 2. Look for the invite under the flashing mail icon. Accept the invitation. (Your Xbox privacy settings should be set to "you can join multiplayer games".) 3. During class, click "friends" and now the joinable realm will be listed for you to join! Note: You cannot continue to play in the realm after class. I will change your settings to "visitor" and close the realm after class. Class Rules: - Respect other people's builds and houses (don't build on them, destroy them, or steal from them) - Stay in the realm with the class; don't go to the Nether Portal. I look forward to learning and playing with you!
Learning Goals
Students will learn grammar by focusing on the 8 parts of speech.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Minecraft contains very little violence, graphic or inappropriate content. There is no blood in the game, however, players can hit/kill enemies or animals to survive. The graphics are very cartoon-like and minimalistic. Students will play on an online private server hosted and moderated by the teacher.
In order to join the server, the teacher will require the student's gamer tag(s). The server is protected/gated and therefore access must be granted to join the worlds.
If you would like to send me a student's gamer tag prior to class, please only do so via private messaging and not in the classroom page.
Pre-Requisites
The student must already have a Minecraft account and some experience playing Minecraft.
