Hello, and thank you for your interest in Number the Stars Book Study self-paced class! My name is Kristi Robertson and I will lead learners as we travel backwards in time to Denmark during World War II in this 10-week or on-demand asynchronous class as we read Lois Lowry's classic children's novel, Number the Stars!

Number the Stars is a historical fiction novel about a 10-year-old girl named Annemarie Johansen whose family takes in her best friend, Ellen Rosen, when German troops begin to relocate all the Jews of Denmark. The story is told from Annemarie's perspective and follows the Danish Resistance as they smuggle almost 7,000 Jews across the sea to Sweden.

There is no prerequisite knowledge required. Learners are required to have their own copy (hardcopy or digital copy) of the book, Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry. We will read and analyze two chapters per week. Please note that since this is a self-paced class, there will not be any live and scheduled Zoom meetings. Learners will access this class on their own time and will view pre-recorded videos.

Students will learn and practice the following comprehension focus skills:
-- Text analysis and responding to literature
-- Exploring how character development and change occurs through events of the plot
-- Making inferences and drawing conclusions based on text clues
-- Summarizing and identifying the main idea of large and small passages of text
-- Defining new vocabulary through context clues

Learners will have the following assignments:
1. Pre-Reading Activities
2. Padlet Activities
3. Discussion questions
4. Post-Reading Activities

Thank you, again, for your interest! I hope to see your learner in my online classroom soon!

I am an avid reader of most genres and absolutely LOVE the message of the importance of protection, bravery, and hop Lois Lowry portrays to readers in her book, Number the Stars. It is a joy to be able to share this reading experience with students! I hope that your child’s participation in this class invites many meaningful conversations between you and him or her.
