Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
**  Students will need to read through chapter 2 before class 1**

**PARENTS: This book involves death.  Students will be reading and possibly writing about death, violence, and smoking.  **

This class is an intensive literature study. It is very in depth. This study is for any student with the desire to expand their knowledge of this book and literature in general. Each week learners will join us one day a week. In the literature portion of this class learners will go over the following:

Character
Character motivation
Conflict
Plot development 
Symbolism
Theme
Conflict resolution
Vocabulary

In the writing portion of this class students will write about the following:

Hope and Dreams
Friendship/Family
Self-Sacrifice and Honor
Poetry
Character Biography Poster for Literary Analysis project

All writing assignments will be in the form of essays, reports, or projects.  Students will be asked if they would like to share with the class.  They do not have to if they don't desire to.  We will offer teacher and student feedback.  Students will work heavily with the teacher as well as their peers while creating their writings.  All of our writing and English studies will be heavily discussion based.  Students will work on writing in and out of class.  Students will go over their work for revisions with the teacher and will complete a final draft.

We are so excited to bring you this course!  Here is a breakdown of the reading that will be done at home between meetings.
Week 1- Introduction and Chapters 1-2
Week 2- Self Concept and Chapters 3-4
Week 3- “Nothing Gold” and Chapters 5-6
Week 4- Heroes and Chapters 7-8
Week 5- Revenge and a Funeral for Chapters 9-10
Week 6- “If”, Character Biography introduction and Chapters 11 & 12 
Week 7- Present Character Biography Projects

You will read each chapter at home completing 2 chapters per week. You will complete all writing and study materials in class time. One hour per week will be spent together in class with more time being spent outside of class for Week 6 for the projects being presented for Week 7.
