Class Experience

US Grade 4
Join us in our Advanced English Reading Strategies and Skills class, where students explore the fundamental aspects of reading and literary analysis. The class aims to provide students with the necessary skills to comprehend and analyze various texts effectively, preparing them to engage critically with both literary and informational materials.

We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

The structured approach and interactive teaching style foster a supportive learning environment where students can grow their confidence and proficiency in reading comprehension. Topics covered include:

- Main Idea, Author's Purpose, and Theme:
Students will learn to identify the central message or main idea of a text, understand why authors write (their purpose), and recognize the underlying theme or lesson conveyed.

- Text Structure and Point of View:
They will explore how texts are organized (text structure) to present information effectively and how the narrative perspective (point of view) influences the story's presentation and meaning.

Inference:
- Students will develop the ability to draw logical conclusions (inferences) from textual clues and their own background knowledge to understand implicit meanings and motivations in texts.

Literary Devices:
- They will be introduced to various literary devices (such as simile, metaphor, personification) and learn how authors use these tools to enhance meaning and create vivid imagery in their writing.

Story and Visual Elements:
- Students will analyze story elements (plot, characters, setting) and visual elements (illustrations, diagrams, graphs) to deepen their understanding of how these elements contribute to the overall meaning of a text.

Literary Texts Level 1 and 2:
- They will engage with literary texts at different complexity levels, from simpler narratives to more complex stories, analyzing characters, plot developments, and thematic elements accordingly.

- Informational Texts Level 1 and 2:
Similarly, they will work with informational texts of varying complexities, learning to extract key information, understand organizational features, and discern the author's purpose.

Class Structure:

The class is structured to progressively build upon students' reading comprehension skills through a variety of activities. Each concept will be introduced with clear explanations and examples to ensure understanding, students will engage in guided activities where they apply newly acquired skills, and class discussions will encourage students to share their interpretations, questions, and insights, fostering a deeper understanding of the texts.

I will provide direct instructions with clear explanations of concepts and model how to apply them in practice, engage students in interactive activities such as group discussions, pair work, and hands-on tasks to reinforce learning, and assign diverse texts for students to read independently and analyze, promoting critical thinking and comprehension.

My teaching style is student-centered, focusing on fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment where I will guide students through activities, encouraging them to explore ideas and interpretations, promote critical thinking by asking probing questions and challenging students to justify their responses with evidence from the text, and provide constructive feedback and support to help students develop their reading strategies and analytical skills.

Students have many opportunities to interact with me through regular class discussions where they can share their thoughts and interpretations and during feedback sessions on classwork.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify the main idea of a text and discern underlying themes or messages conveyed by the author. They will practice summarizing texts effectively, distinguishing between central ideas and supporting details.
Students will develop the ability to recognize different text structures (e.g., cause and effect, compare and contrast). They will understand how point of view influences the presentation of information in narratives and informational texts.
