This course begins with a getting to know you session and discussion of the author, Ann Braden. Learners will independently read three to four chapters a week and participate in a literature circle-styled guided discussion during class. They must have a copy of the book in either print or digital format. 

The culminating activity will be a written book review of The Benefits of Being an Octopus.

 We will get to know each other and be introduced to author, Ann Braden.  Learners will be briefed on class routines and expectations. We will read Chapter One as well.

Themes Resilience and Empowerment: Zoey learns to find her voice and stand up for herself and her family. Poverty and Domestic Violence: The novel explores the impact of these issues on children and families. Friendship and Support: The importance of having a support system is highlighted through Zoey’s relationships There is no explicit violence, nudity, or sexual content.
