Weekly Essay Practice for 4th and 5th Grade

Start at any time! 

We will cover informational, opinion, narrative, and instructional (how-to) essays as we rotate through these essay types. Each week there will be a different prompt. Learners will plan and write an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. 

When we meet we will discuss the essay type and prompt, read an example essay, and brainstorm ways to plan the week's essay.


Week of March 3rd: Opinion/Persuasive Essay: Is it better to spend an hour a day reading or an hour a day exercising? Why?

Week of March 10th: Spring Break! No Class.

Week of March 17th: Informational Essay: Coral Reefs

Week of March 24th: Instructional (how-to) plant flowers (article provided for background knowledge)

Week of March 31st: Narrative: Write about a memorable holiday celebration.

Week of April 7th: Opinion/Persuasive Essay: Is recess necessary in upper elementary?

Week of April 14th: Informational Essay: Velociraptors

Week of April 21st: Instructional (how-to) start a business (article provided for background knowledge)

Week of April 28th: Narrative: Writer's Choice with a visual writing prompt. 

Week of May 5th: Opinion/Persuasive Essay: Should pre-teens and teens be required to perform community service?

Week of May 12th: Informational Essay: The Lost Colony of Roanoke

Week of May 19th: Instructional (how-to) fly a kite (article included for background knowledge)

Week of May 26th: Narrative: What would you do if you woke up one morning with wings?
