Weekly Essay Practice for 4th and 5th Grade

Learners practice their five-paragraph writing skills each week with a new prompt. We will cover informational, opinion/persuasive, narrative, and instructional essays as we rotate through these essay types.

Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
Start at any time! 

We will cover informational, opinion, narrative, and instructional (how-to) essays as we rotate through these essay types. Each week there will be a different prompt. Learners will plan and write an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. 

When we meet we will discuss the essay type and prompt, read an example essay, and brainstorm ways to plan the week's essay.



Week of September 9th: Narrative Essay/Write about a time you tried something new and how you felt before, during, and after. 

Week of September 16th: Proceedural Essay/How to play your favorite game.

Week of September 23rd: Informational Essay/Photosynthesis (Articles will be provided for research).

Week of September 30th: Opinion/Persuasive Essay/Should 10-year-olds be given cell phones?

Week of October 7th: Narrative Essay/Tell about a time you were surprised. Who surprised you? How did they surprise you? How did you react?

Week of October 14th: Proceedural Essay/How to make a sandwich.

Week of October 21st: Informational Essay/How is fog created? (Articles will be provided for research).

Week of October 28th: Opinion/Persuasive Essay/Is it better to live in a large city or a small town?

Week of November 4th: Narrative Essay/Tell about someone you know who is a good friend. What makes that person awesome?

Week of November 11th: Proceedural Essay/How to build a sandcastle.

Week of November 18th: Informational Essay/What is the rock cycle? (Articles will be provided for research).

FALL BREAK! No Classes.

Week of December 2nd: Opinion/Persuasive Essay/Do you prefer dogs or cats? Convince your readers that your choice is better.
