Fractions are everywhere! The more students are comfortable with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them, the easier it will be to perform skills such as: solving equations, evaluating formulas, or finding the probability of an event. In this class, we will spend 5-15 minutes reviewing how to multiply and simplify fractions, as well as changing improper fractions to mixed numbers. We will then spend the remainder of class solving a decoder puzzle (Moving Words) I am a firm believer in giving students think time, so time will be given for students to work independently before we share answers as a group. Instruction will be provided as needed, but students should have a basic understanding of how to add, subtract, multiply and divide before taking this class.
Learning Goals
By the end of the lesson, students will have reviewed:
-using the GCF to simplify fractions
-cross-cancelling before multiplying
-changing improper fractions to mixed numbers

Learners should have paper and pencil to work out problems with me. If they need a multiplication chart or calculator as a support, I do not mind them using these materials. A link for an online calculator can be provided upon request.
