Practice Makes Perfect! Skill Building to Prepare for Pre-Algebra (Ages 10 - 13)
This 4-day camp is a great way for learners to get introduced to pre-algebra topics, or strengthen their skills before moving into Algebra 1. Critical thinking activities and puzzles with instruction will be used to help reinforce skills!

Using a power point presentation, we will do a quick review of skills needed to be able to solve the puzzle/game of the day. We will discuss strategies for solving problems, and volunteers will be called on to share their solutions. Students can also use the chat box to share solutions. A deeper dive into instruction will be provided as needed. During the 4 days, students can expect to work on the following: Class 1: Solving a Decoder Puzzle to Practice Order of Operations Class 2: Using Emoji Puzzles to Solve Addition and Subtraction Equations Class 3: Adding and Subtracting Integers (Kakooma game if there's time, or examples will be shared in the Classroom) Class 4: Solving a Decoder Puzzle to Multiply and Divide Integers Students in this course should have some understanding of how to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers. We will build on these skills to include operations with integers, and use this knowledge to solve equations and evaluate expressions.
Learning Goals
Students participating in this class will:
-practice basic math operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing)
-evaluate expressions using the order of operations (PEMDAS)
-use inverse operations to solve equations
-review problem solving strategies that can be used to help solve word problems
