Homework
1-2 hours per week. The students will be given writing homework in connection to the class material that can be sent to the teacher for personalized feedback.

Learn to master figurative language techniques such as metaphors, personification, and alliteration, elevating your creative expression. Expand your vocabulary by exploring 12 carefully chosen words per session (36 words in total), and improve reading comprehension through engaging text analysis with multiple-choice questions and essay responses.

Explore synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs while refining word meanings through lessons on denotations and connotations. Develop critical reading strategies, test-taking techniques, and the skills needed to excel in exams, including crafting organized written responses.

Learning Goals

Master Figurative Language Techniques:
Students will understand and effectively use figurative language elements, such as metaphors, personification, and alliteration, to enhance their creative writing and expression.
Expand Vocabulary:
Students will learn 12 new, carefully selected words each session (36 in total), understanding their meanings, synonyms, antonyms, and appropriate usage in sentences and writing.

Syllabus

12 Lessons
over 6 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Figurative language
 Learn about figurative language, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, and alliteration.

Lesson 2:
Vocabulary
 We will cover twelve vocabulary words, and the students will be given a booklet with practices to deepen their knowledge.

Lesson 3:
Reading comprehension
 We will cover strategies for reading comprehension and multiple-choice tests and explain the tone or theme of a story.

The students will be given three texts to choose from to analyze for homework. They will answer multiple-choice questions and write a short essay.
Stories: The Glass Bird (Realistic fiction) and A Quiet Kind of Bravery (Historical fiction)
Article: The Influence of World War I on Hemingway and Tolkien

Review
 We will review what we have learned so far and do a few creative writing exercises to practice using figurative language and vocabulary words.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
One of the stories used for reading comprehension talks about the resistance movement in France during World War II, and one of them features a ghost. Two of the stories mention grandparents who have passed away, and one has a brief scene that portrays bullying. The Articles talk about World War I, The Cold War, and women's situations during the Industrial Revolution.
Pre-Requisites
The student needs to be able to read and write at an age-appropriate level to be able to grasp the material.
Supply List
A booklet with activities, questions, and assignments will be available every week to help the students deepen their knowledge of the lesson material. 

The student will receive ten stories throughout the class duration.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I am an award-winning writer with expertise and a passion for words, writing, and reading. 

My teaching education in Sweden focused heavily on critical reading and thinking skills. I also have dysgraphia, so I can empathize with students' literacy struggles.
