US Grade 8 - 11
An ongoing online writing class where we embrace the dark, the eerie, and the terrifying. Do you love spine-tingling stories, eerie atmospheres, and unsettling twists? Then welcome to a writing class unlike any other. Horror is one of the most powerful genres in storytelling. It explores our deepest fears and the unknown. Whether it’s the slow dread of a psychological thriller, the heart-pounding terror of a monster chase, or the eerie unease of something just not right, horror plays on what makes us human—our fears, our imaginations, and our need to understand the darkness. This class will not focus on violent or gory horror. Each week we will: Begin with a 15-20-minute brainstorming session inspired by an image or concept, such as different horror subgenres or classic fears, such as being alone in the woods at night or discovering a hidden door in your house. We will spend the remainder of the class crafting and sharing horror stories, using our creativity to explore fear in all its forms. This is an ongoing class, which means there’s no set end date—jump in whenever you’re ready and stay for as many weeks as you dare. The First Six Weeks' Themes: Picture Prompt: The House at the End of the Road – Who lives there? What secrets does it hold? Or…what’s waiting inside? Classic Fears: Being Chased – Whether it’s a shadowy figure, a monster, or something unseen, how do you capture the terror of pursuit? Picture Prompt: The Forgotten Doll – You find an old, abandoned doll at a flea market. What happens when you bring it home? The Unknown: Something in the Walls – Scratching noises, whispers, or something moving just out of sight—what's hiding within? Picture Prompt: The Door That Wasn’t There Yesterday – A door appears where there was none before. What’s on the other side? Urban Legends & Folklore – Reimagine an existing legend or create your own eerie tale inspired by myths and whispers. If you love horror, enjoy writing, and aren’t afraid to dive into the dark, This Class Is Not For the Fainthearted is the place for you. Come ready to write, share, and scare—if you dare.
Learning Goals
Develop Creative Writing Skills – Strengthen storytelling techniques such as plot development, character creation, and world-building within the horror genre.
Master Suspense and Atmosphere – Learn how to build tension, create eerie settings, and craft unsettling moments that keep readers on edge.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This class is a horror writing workshop where students explore themes of fear, suspense, and the eerie unknown. While the focus is on creativity and storytelling, some discussions and writing may include unsettling themes such as supernatural entities, psychological tension, and classic horror elements (e.g., haunted houses, urban legends, and monsters).
All content will have an emphasis on storytelling rather than excessive gore or graphic violence. However, if your teen is highly sensitive to spooky or dark themes, please consider whether this class is the right fit for them.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am an award-winning writer with a master’s degree in education and nearly a decade of experience teaching creative writing online. I have a deep love for storytelling, especially horror, and have even won an award for one of my horror stories. My writing is often inspired by folklore, psychology, and the art of suspense, and I love helping students explore their creativity through eerie and chilling tales.
