Welcome! (Please feel free to request this class to set up a time as scheduling permits.) SPECIAL NOTE: If you have taken any other fluency classes with me, your child has already learned the 4 main strategies taught in this course. This is for new learners only. Through live and interactive video chat, learners will participate in this multi-day support course. Your learner and I will focus and work on meeting their individual needs in oral reading fluency, by utilizing the four main strategies for improving fluency. Please note that this is NOT a phonics or reading comprehension class. Please see my other offered classes or email me to see what might best fit your needs. With over 2 decades of experience in the classroom, primarily as an Academic Intervention teacher of Mathematics and English Language Arts, I am excited to share my experience and teaching skills with your child. My classroom is a place where students are encouraged to take risks, make mistakes, and learn through the process of perseverance. {Please note the Outschool system will only allow age ranges to be posted in a 5-year format. However, since this is 1-1 support I am happy to work with children from beginner readers up through 6th grade in reading fluency.} ***Your learner must be at least a beginner reader, capable of reading 2nd grade SIGHT WORDS, SENTENCES, and SHORT STORIES. Students will participate in a timed high frequency "drill". Students will also read out loud a short text/phrases and participate in conversation that gives them the opportunity to receive support with strategies for improved fluency. I can also informally help with the following during the class as necessary (may include, but not limited to...): *Practice "drills" with common sight words/language that students encounter in texts. *Introduce basic concepts to support future skills. *Break down sentences and take note of grammatical rules. *Vocabulary development. *etc. In order to provide individualized instruction and support, please message me 24 hours/1 day in advance of our meeting to let me know the grade level or grade level equivalency your child is working in. If you have any assessment data that would like to share, please do so. This can give me a starting point for working with your child, but I will also have materials ready in the event we need to level up or down to best support your learner. Feel free to also share your child's frustrations and successes with reading out loud, areas you would like to see growth in, etc. This will allow me to prepare tips, strategies, engagement activities, and/or support specifically tailored to your learner's needs. You will receive a welcome email when you sign up for a session, please respond to the questions/topics in this email, so that I can best support your learner. Class format may consist of teacher-modeling, timed drills, and reading out loud. In my experience, most students need multiple and/or on-going sessions to strengthen concepts and new skills. Continued practice outside of the classroom is also highly recommended. Just like with sports, practice is necessary to keep skills strong! As per Outschool policy, parents are not to be on screen during the class, however, you will be able to rewatch the video after class is done per request. Private Tutoring Refund Policy: I use the Outschool Refund Policy for Private Tutoring. You must cancel within the allotted time by Outschool to get a refund for this class. If the system does not automatically initiate a refund for you on your end when you cancel and/or withdraw, then this means that you have canceled outside of the allotted time and unfortunately no refund or credit will be granted under any circumstance. The policy is as follows: "All One-Time classes have a standard refund policy: 'Full refund until a week in advance, or within 24 hours of purchase (until class starts).' " Lastly, no refunds will be issued by the teacher for technical issues on the student's end. Additionally, students must arrive to sessions on time. A session will be canceled without a refund and a future date makeup session will not be scheduled for students that arrive late to class. Students must arrive no later than 10 minutes after the start of class time or the class will be canceled and no refund and/or credit will be granted. Additionally, class/tutoring sessions will not be extended if your learner does not arrive on time for the session. We will cover as much as we possibly can during the allotted time including the time missed for arriving to class late. Thank you for understanding. As always, please feel free to ask me any questions! ~Miss Lisa ---------- General: Here are a few reminders as we prepare to begin learning together through Outschool using ZOOM. Please read the following details carefully, as this contains important information that will set up your learner(s) to have the best experience possible. 👨👩👧👦 No siblings should appear on camera during class unless they are an enrolled learner in class. All students appearing on camera need to be registered students with Outschool and do need to be enrolled in class to participate as per Outschool policy. ☎️ Parents, if you email me after the start of class, I will be unable to respond until after class has ended because I will be teaching. If you need to reach me during class, please communicate using the chat feature in ZOOM. This allows a message to pop up on the screen while I am teaching; otherwise, I will not see or respond to messages until after class has ended. 🙅♂️ A gentle reminder that while parents are welcome to remain in the general vicinity of their student during class (especially if students need technical assistance), parents should never appear on camera (as per Outschool policy, no adults may appear on camera or attend classes). I take this policy very seriously for both the comfort level of students in my classroom as well as their safety. If parents appear on camera for an extended period, that student will be moved to the waiting room until the issue is resolved. 📧 If you encounter technical issues getting into class, please email support@outschool.com for assistance. You may also sign up for technical issue alerts or view any technical issues in realtime at status.outschool.com. 🚫 Teachers are unable to share links and passwords for ZOOM classes due to safety concerns. Learners must access the classroom through their Outschool account directly. 🎥 Our class will be video recorded as per Outschool safety policy to ensure the safety of learners and teachers; however, this recording will only be shared at the teacher's discretion (i.e. with students who miss class). 🗣️ Learners should be prepared to have their video cameras and microphones turned on throughout the entire class. 👕 While we are learning from home in a comfortable environment, a shirt & bottoms are required for class. Thank you for ensuring your child is dressed appropriately to be on camera during class. In addition, you'll want to make sure that your student is in a quiet spot that is ideally up against a wall so that we do not unintentionally see things happening in your home that we should not be seeing, as this may also disrupt our ideal learning environment. 💛 If you have any social concerns that I should be aware of as the teacher, please message me prior to class. I always appreciate hearing from parents if I should be on the lookout for any specific concerns that might arise during class. This enables me to ensure the best possible experience for all learners. ***The Tutor makes no promises or warranties with regards to a Learner's performance as a result of any tutoring provided. The Learner is responsible for applying learned skills and strategies to related assignments, exercises, practice, or homework outside of tutoring in order to maintain skills/show growth. I look forward to teaching your child soon. Please reach out with any questions you may have. I believe in very strong parent-teacher relationships and communication to ensure your child’s experience within my classroom is a positive and safe one. ~Thank you!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Miss Lisa. I am a mom of 1 amazing teenager, who also happens to be a 3-time local and 1-time regional spelling bee champ! I also have three fur babies - a spunky miniature dachshund dog (Dexter), an adventurous and gravity-defying cat (Sarah), and a super soft and snuggly orange-tiger cat (Calie). I was born and raised in New York, but not the City!
I taught in a public school for 21 years with a Master's Degree in Education, and a permanent teaching certificate for New York, with experience from PreK-8th grade. As a teacher, I worked in different classroom settings, including traditional, as a co-teacher in Special Education & Social Studies classrooms, a Literacy interventionist in Middle School, and as an Academic Intervention Specialist in Reading and Math for Elementary and Middle School. I am also an adjunct professor of Education at a local college.
I opened my own (hobby) business after 400+ hours of training to become a Certified Aromatherapist through Aromahead Institute. This training included an anatomy and biology course, as well as organic chemistry. Wow, those were very interesting! This has allowed me to help others in finding balance in their lives through natural wellness with custom products and activities. This experience also reinforced that we are never too young or too old to learn new things. There are always opportunities to grow, challenge ourselves, and to persevere.
Other life experiences include experience with 4-H, sign language, crafting, and baking.
I love to create courses that are based on students' needs and interests! It is important to integrate hands-on/minds-on courses that engage students in their learning, that also allow them to explore and challenge their own thinking, with myself as their guide and scaffolder. I have a passion for helping students close achievement gaps as well. Students need opportunities to work on skills in a safe environment that allow them to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow in learning.
My experiences in a very diverse public school, as well as my desire to learn and grow myself, have given me many opportunities to create new and challenging content to support learners. Developing my own natural wellness business (hobby) has also taught me perseverance and has given me the opportunity to help others. Teaching ESL online has strengthened my skills teaching on a virtual platform. Through this opportunity I have been taught different strategies that work not only for ESL students, but that also made me a better teacher overall, as I dived into how people learn a new language and how to best support that. I am also now a homeschooling Mom, of that previously mentioned, awesome kid above. We are excited about this path in his educational career as he hopes to do dual enrollment in college while completing high school requirements.
Overall, pairing fun and engaging activities with learning can help learners internalize new concepts and strengthen learning. It is important to me that I differentiate for all learners so that they can experience success and growth in my classroom and courses. It is my hope that your learner finds my classes to be a safe and respectful place where they can take risks in their thinking, make and learn from mistakes, and grow in their understanding and application of skills. This can be done when we smile, laugh, and become engaged in a positive class full of encouragement.
Thank you for taking the time to read about me. I am grateful for you! I would love to meet you and your child(ren) in a class sometime!
