Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Beginner - Intermediate Level
During this ongoing class, we will read a Mo Willems story from the Piggie & Elephant series each week. Students will actively participate reading aloud and providing a voice for these two lovable characters, Piggie & Elephant. Students will have opportunities to read and reread the text to improve both fluency and prosody (the stress and intonation on words). After students complete the reading of the book, we will discuss the characters, the setting, the plot, and other comprehension questions. Students will have a chance to share how the story we read together is related to their own lives. This class is designed for first graders, but open to younger and older students reading at or near the 1st grade level. Students must be able to read basic sight words (If your student can read this sentence, this class should be a good fit: You cannot even see it) and simple sound out words (fun, ran, nap, slop). Most books in this series are levels G, H, I. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to me! Students do not need to bring a copy of the book to class. The book will be shared on screen for student access.

Please note this is not a class for learning to decode. Learners should be able to read simple sentences and sound out some words before taking this class. If you have an emerging reader interested in this class, try the Read & Repeat class where we use echo reading to help learners develop reading skills.

Hi, I specialize in teaching reading. It is my passion to introduce students to books and develop a love for reading in kids of all ages. I have a masters degree in education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a special education certificate in special education from Brooklyn College in New York City. I have worked as a peer tutor, as a test prep tutor, and as an Orton-Gillingham tutor, helping students overcome various reading difficulties to achieve their goals. I also worked as a reading teacher and a special education teacher at a title 1 charter school in NYC. I believe that every child has the potential to become an avid reader, we just have to ignite their passion and build their skills in an individualized way. I recently moved from NYC to live near the ocean. My hobbies include going to the beach, traveling, playing tennis, and or course READING!
