Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 9
This class is designed for students that would benefit from summer learning instruction in the area of reading. The class is individualized and the first session would begin with an assessment to determine reading strengths and weaknesses. The assessment assesses reading, spelling, phonemic awareness and comprehension. After the assessment, an individualized plan will be made for the student. When teaching reading and spelling, Orton Gillingham and Wilson Reading approaches will be used. Each lesson will be based on what the individual student needs to succeed, but some possible topics include: fluency, syllable division, syllable types, letter/sound correspondence, sight words, spelling generalizations, vocabulary, and comprehension. An example 4 week schedule would be:
Week 1: pre-assessment
Week 2: differentiated lessons
Week 3: differentiated lessons
Week 4: Post assessment and game review

Class is structured as follows:
10 minutes of warm up activities
30 minutes of direct instruction
5 minutes of cool down/show and tell time

As a teacher, I believe it is important to get to know students and engage them by focusing on strengths. This is a 1:1 class so students will get all the individual attention. There is no prior knowledge needed for this class. Beginner readers are welcome!
