Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 4
I am a Special Educator trained in Seeing Stars. The Seeing Stars®: Symbol Imagery for Phonological and Orthographic Processing in Reading and Spelling program develops symbol imagery—the ability to create mental imagery for sounds and letters within words as a basis for reading and spelling. The development of symbol imagery improves word recognition, spelling, and reading fluency skills. This program is ideal for struggling readers, English language learners, student with dyslexia, and emerging readers.

Symbol Imagery taught in this program will help with:
-Memorizing sight words
-Rapid word attack
-Orthographic awareness
-Reading comprehension
-Contextual reading fluency
-Spelling
-Word recognition

Unlike traditional phonemic awareness/phonics programs or approaches that teach extensive decoding rules and strategies, Seeing Stars develops a sensory-cognitive process that underlies reading skills. The development of symbol imagery improves word recognition and reading fluency.

Class will be very much based on individual needs, but will include:
2-3 minutes of phonemic awareness
5-7 minutes of see-say (picturing sounds and letters)
5 minute of image and read syllables and sounds
10 minutes of decoding in a workbook
5 minute notebook dictation

I will also include fun breaks and videos as needed, dependent on student needs. My teaching style is to meet students where they are and help them improve with positive engagement and encouragement.

This is a 1:1 tutoring class, so there is no student to student interaction.

No previous knowledge of reading is required. This class is open to beginner readers as well as struggling readers.
