The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia. It is most properly understood and practiced as an approach, not a method, program, or system. We will cover topics such as: syllable types, suffixes, prefixes, blending, roots, welded sounds, spelling rules and more! What is covered depends on student needs. The class will begin with an assessment to determine the student's needs and class will be individualized from there. Class is structured as follows: -Sound Drills -Phonemic Awareness -Review - New Concept -Spelling using Tiles - Dictation -Reading Fluency My teaching style is based on fostering a relationship with the student first and working from the student's strengths. This is a one to one class so there will be no interaction with other students. Students do not have to have any previous knowledge and beginner readers are welcome.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their reading, writing and spelling skills.
