Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
In this class, each week, learners will be invited to share their thoughts, facts, or even props for a particular Harry Potter themed discussion topic.

A relaxed, fun, friendly environment will be created in class to allow every learner to share and develop their public speaking experience and confidence week to week. It is often easier to speak about something we know about, and are interested in so this class allows Potter fans to talk about what they love and in the process develop their public speaking skills and confidence.

Topics will be shared in the classroom at the end of each class and again at least 24 hours before the next class, to include:
Week 1- Which is your favourite Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts creature? Do you have a prop to share maybe?
Week 2- Which is your favourite Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts character? Have you created any fan art of them maybe or what 3 questions would you ask them if you could?
Week 3- Which house would the sorting hat put you in and why? Do you have any items you can wear/bring along in your house colour?
Week 4- Share your Harry Potter themed wand and why you love it (homemade ones are welcome) or whose wand would you love to own?
Week 5- Which is your favourite Harry Potter themed book? Do you have a well-loved copy or an unusual edition you can share?
Week 6- Which subject would you be best at? Who is your favourite Hogwarts teacher?
Week 7- Which Harry Potter character are you most like and why? Do you have any pictures/fan art to share of them?
Week 8- What is your favourite spell and why? What might your Patronus creature be?
Week 9- Who would be your best friend at Hogwarts? Would you be in Dumbledore's Army?
Week 10- Share your own Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts fact or idea you think we might not know.

Mrs. T will encourage learners to participate and share, not only as a huge Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts fan herself, but by using her skills and years of experience as a public speaking tutor, and from the background of having real-life personal experience of being a child who struggled with public speaking herself.

We will start every class with a fun tongue twister so we are all warmed up to speak our best and will often finish class with a quick game of "Who said that?" too. In this game, learners can guess which character might have said a line. Wrong answers may help everyone get closer to the right answer, so all attempts are welcomed and encouraged. As learners get more confident in class week to week they can take it in turns to create questions for this themselves, and see if they can catch Mrs. T out!

ALL Potter fans, from ALL houses, ALL levels of knowledge, experience, and ability are welcome in this class. We will ALL work together to encourage each other to share as much as possible, as a way to develop our public speaking experience and confidence, and perhaps also increase our knowledge of our favourite Potter books/movies too.

Learners are very welcome to wear robes, scarves, their house colours (Gryffindor: Red, Slytherin: Green, Hufflepuff: Yellow, Ravenclaw: Blue) or any themed accessories to class, and the bringing along of props (bought or handmade) and homemade fan art is actively encouraged too.

For learners who need a bit of extra time/patience or encouragement to share, this class can also be available as a 1:1 option. Please pop me a message to discuss times and your requirements.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Southampton
I am a fully qualified teacher (BAPA, PGCE) with 16+ years of experience teaching Drama (and Performing Arts, English, Music, and PSHCE (Personal Social Health Education) in bricks and mortar schools, where I currently still teach part-time, including running small group and 1:1 confidence-building workshops. I also have many years of experience leading community workshop schemes (like create a play in a week) and local drama groups for ages 4 to 16.

As a professional actress, I've performed to children from ages 2-14 in theatres, arts centres, social clubs, historical properties,  nurseries, and schools. Playing roles such as the Gingerbread man and a tortoise, to a wartime headmistress and Queen Elizabeth the first! With lots of Q & A and interactive workshops along the way.

I then branched into presenting (live, events, radio, TV, and for holiday companies across Europe) including some Voiceover work. I currently create and present drama and presenter tuition videos and have a regular podcast.

I have produced and directed many productions (musicals and plays) as well, including some I have written myself.

I am very experienced in coaching learners to produce their best performance, and I love seeing them develop in front of my eyes. Many of my ex-students have gone on to study at prestigious London stage schools in acting and directing, even though we are over 200 miles away, and they only take a small number from out of the catchment area each year. Previous learners have achieved several A+ grades in a speech and drama festival, top grades in a session of 20, and a Bronze overall against native speakers, second round of a national competition. I have also coached learners on all different levels, like one who didn't wish to speak when I started working with him (aged 10) but he ended up playing the lead role in his final year production (aged 15).
