Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
What will be taught?

This course is for learners who are new to long division or find long division tricky. Although this is a FLEX class which means no live classes, there is the advantage of step by step video instruction in a fun and direct style. Learners can download the resources and work along with the video. There are additional worksheets that can be completed and submitted. I will grade / mark these and set more challenges according to ability.

The classroom will also be a place to ask for clarification, help and challenge each other.

How is the class structured?

Each week there will be a main video and shorter videos to go along side the key problems set.
Learning long division can be a little tricky and learners can become frustrated. My aim is to break down each step and create a pattern with solving each process so that it 'sticks'.

My teaching style:

My teaching style is fun, creative, direct and I am here to scaffold, clarify and support.

How learners will interact:

- Instructional videos that will have space to comment.
- Activities and tasks related to long division
- Class discussion
- Video feedback from learners explaining method application - talking through methods helps to solidify understanding and also is very effective to support learners in spotting small errors.

What is required from Learners in terms of experience or knowledge?

- Children will need to have a secure understanding of their multiplication tables fact.
- To be able to add with confidence.
- It will be an advantage to be able to be able to know how to upload videos for responses or photos or scans of completed worksheets.

Week 1 -
July 11 2022

⭐️ An Introduction to long division:
In this video I will be looking at what long division is. It is a way to solve division problems with large numbers. Long division is a method that helps learners solve problems that are difficult to do in a mental maths style.
⭐️ I will be introducing and explaining key vocabulary such as: dividend, divisor and quotient.
⭐️ I will be introducing tips and tricks along the way through classroom posts and videos.
⭐️ Videos will model how to solve each problem and learners can complete problems alongside my instruction asynchronously (offline).
⭐️ There will be tasks and activities set such as word problems and number problems for learners to solve.
⭐️ Printable worksheets.

Week 2
July 18th

⭐️ Introduction to long division 3 digit numbers divided by 1 and 2 digit numbers using mathematical and lay math terminology.
⭐️ Videos modellng how to solve each problem using familiar times tables.
