Class Experience

US Grade 1
Beginner Level
1
Reading is an important skill needed to succeed in life. This class will offer strategies to help struggling students and ESL students become more proficient in reading. This class provides students will practice that can help them get to the next level of reading.
The students will have ample opportunities to read and practice skills reviewed in class. I will focus on each students needs and monitor their progress throughout class. I will also help them work on skills needed to progress to the next reading level. The students will actively participate and work on strategies for their reading help.
I will begin the reading lesson with sight word study and review of vocabulary study. We will also learn about decoding and phonics to help us read. The books I will use can help build confidence because they are simple text. I will then model the strategy using the books and prompt students to integrate their reading processes to their reading. The students will read silently and we will engage in conversation about the text and think about all the strategies This class format will begin with awareness, phonetics, review of phonic skills taught the week before plus vocabulary, and comprehension. Each lesson will touch on each skill and students will also read leveled and decodable books every class. This class is designed to practice reading and be on level in first grade. Please look at the syllabus for each week.
I believe that all children can be successful in learning how to read. I want to motivate the students with important reading strategies needed in first grade. I want them to feel excited and less anxious about reading!
