Class Experience

US Grade 2
Beginner Level
Inference skills are important for reading comprehension because it helps us as readers to understand text. Authors don’t always explain thoughts to us in books and we as readers sometimes have to piece together stories like detectives to figure out what’s going on. We take our background knowledge and experiences to help us make an inference in books which can allows us to more fully understand the meaning of text.
So how will I teach inferring? I will teach students the strategy of inferring by having them share personal thoughts about the stories we share . As the students make inferences out loud , I will complement them about the inferences they made! I will also model how we make inferences and create an anchor chart to help the students visually understand what they are noticing. We will use sticky notes, graphic organizers, and bookmarks to help them learn about inferring. The students will learn specific comprehension strategy instruction needed to be critical thinkers. We will build and strengthen inferring skills so that we can fully understand text more fully.
