Opinion Writing is a powerful tool that helps students express their thoughts on paper. It is an effective way to foster critical thinking skills needed in reading g and writing. The students will express their personal viewpoints on a topic. Opinion writing allows students to share their thoughts on a subject through writing. It’s a great way to communicate their ideas on paper. It is a very valuable skill in life. We will begin our unit with sharing a mentor text that shows an example of having an opinion. The students will identify the authors opinion and they will analyze why the author feels this way. I will first model how to choose a topic and generate ideas for their opinion pieces. Then I will model how to plan their writing using a graphic organizer. They will then begin writing a topic sentence that begins with a topic sentence that states their opinion. Next the students will come up with supporting reasons why they feel that way. Finally, the students will add additional supporting readins to make their writing more persuasive to the reader. The students will identify the introduction opinion sentence , support their opinion, and come up with a conclusion. This unit of writing is just perfect for first grade because students enjoy writing about their opinions! It is a great opportunity to voice their opinions through writing. The students will revise and edit their books to get their reading for publishing. We will share our writings and celebrate our accomplishments!
