Class Experience

Mozart is a creature of legend. Along with Einstein, his name has become a synonym for genius. Mozart was the first composer to earn a living as a freelancer, independent of a religious or royal patron. He paved the way for the musician as superstar, giving rise to the many artists of all genres we admire today. A child prodigy, Mozart traveled the world from a very young age, growing used to a comfortable life in which he was pampered and indulged. Although he died at a young age, his body of work is astonishing for the depth of emotion on display and his ability to delight a wider audience, as well as the sheer volume of work he left behind. Underneath the playful nature we all associate with the man lay a restless worker, passionately filling every spare moment getting his musical thoughts out on paper.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Some adult topics. Possible mentions of romance and nineteenth century courtship, as well as poverty and illness. Nothing explicit or gory however. Mozart could sometimes have a bit of a potty and juvenile sense of humour, not altogether unlike the character played by Tom Hulse in the film "Amadeus".

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a BA in music. Mozart has long been my favourite composer. Although I often hear people say that Mozart is trite and superficial (I think because he so easily produces beauty), I hear understated courtly love, yearning, and sadness as well as triumphant delight, when I listen to or play his works. Mozart for me encompasses a whole world of feelings - the whole gamut of human emotions - often expressed with some restraint , making it all the more poignant and heartbreaking in its beauty.
