NOTE: This is the course offered for middle grades (ages 9-14). There is a high school level equivalent course (ages 14-18). Check my profile to find that version. ___________________________________ What will we study? Students will explore the lives and music of various influential Western composers from the Renaissance to the Modern Period. I will engage with learners through lectures and discussions that are supported by visually rich and interesting PowerPoint visuals and audio clips of the composers' most popular works. Special attention will be given to listening for and accurately identifying the style of each composer. Notetaking sheets will be provided, encouraging students to interact with the material and to retain what they've learned. No previous musical experience is necessary for learners to be successful in this class. _____________________________________ The composers will be introduced according the following schedule: Palestrina (Renaissance Period) J. S. Bach (Baroque Period) Mozart (Classical Period) Beethoven (Classical Period) Schumann (Romantic Period) Brahms (Romantic Period) Tchaikovsky (Romantic Period) Rachmaninoff (Late Romantic Period) Maurice Ravel (Impressionism) John Williams (Modern Period)

Students will learn about:
*The life and works of Italian composer, Palestrina (1525-1594)
*Renaissance music, including polyphonic songs
*Many types of choral music composed by Palestrina

Students will learn about:
*The life and works of German composer and organist, Bach (1685-1750)
*Baroque period instruments and music
*Bach's development of counterpoint

*The life and works of Austrian composer, Mozart (1756-1791)
*The music style of the Classical Period
*Mozart's operas and concertos
