The Music Composers Club is a place for kids to learn how to write music (compose) using music software called Noteflight Learn. We will learn about music theory concepts, work on composing skills such as notating music we hear, learn how composers use musical concepts to create music, and then give time and support for each student to work on their composing project on their own computer. Beginners can concentrate on creating a simple song. Advanced students can work at their own pace to complete a more advanced composition. All students will have a chance to show their compositions for positive, constructive feedback and encouragement. Students will be encouraged to compose music that expresses their personal style and holds meaning for them. We will actively practice being a positive creative learning community, supporting each other by listening and showing kindness. Access to Noteflight Learn is included with enrollment. (See Parental Guidance statement for more information about this external resource and giving consent to use it.) Composing basics we will talk about when you begin: - how to start a new composition in Noteflight Learn - choosing (or adding) a voice for your composition - entering notes and rests on the staff in Noteflight Learn - how to hear your composition in Noteflight Learn Composing topics we will focus on: Week of 6/6: note pitches, using higher and lower notes to create a musical landscape Week of 6/13: note durations, using longer and shorter notes to create movement Week of 6/20: constructing chords, using single notes and chords to create texture Week of 6/27: writing a melody and harmony Note: We will review and build on these topics in later weeks so that learners can build skills in composing. In each class, we will: - have engaging activities designed to help you understand music you see and hear (theory) - learn about the composing topic through discussion and examples - practice composing on your own computer (composing time) Our class structure and activities are designed for students who have these computer skills: - selecting items on the screen - copying selected items (Ctrl-C or Command-C) - pasting selected items (Ctrl-V or Command-V) - switching between several menus or command bars to find tools **Students can enroll in Private Composing Lessons to develop these skills. During our composing time you can: - work on your own composition on your computer using Noteflight Learn (access included) - see other students' compositions if they want to share them - share your composition with the other students if you want to - get help and ideas from the teacher and other students - practice sharing positive, constructive feedback In this positive creative learning community, we will: - give others equal chances to share and listen - listen patiently when others speak - use kind words when speaking about others - treat each person's style as important and valuable - let the teacher guide the conversation so everyone can learn About me: In 30 years of teaching music in private lessons and public elementary schools, the most incredible moments for me have occurred when students enjoyed learning music and felt positive personal connections. This is what I hope to bring to the many young people learning from home or hoping for more meaningful music experiences. I am positive, upbeat, and relaxed, and invite students to join in as they feel comfortable. If you are looking for a connective, nurturing, musical environment for your child or children, I hope you'll join us!
