Class Experience

I wish I had the tools to compose when I was younger… I know there was music inside of me, but I wasn’t always sure how to represent it on a score, or knew techniques that would help increase my skill. Now as a working composer, I love seeing my student’s joy for composing, so this class will provide a space where they can explore music and writing.

In class we will learn different composition skills, music theory, software, orchestration, and have ongoing projects that we can share.

If students have musical background and know how to read basic notes, that is preferred, though if they are new to reading notes, we can talk about some resources to help.

The classes will be divided into small sections of music theory, composition techniques, and different lessons like studying other compositions, learning about composers, orchestration (all of the different instruments and what they can do). We will also learn how to write music into a score.

I encourage downloading MuseScore (free), Sibelius, or a similar software.

I added two software in the resources section. They are both common, trusted notation software. There are free versions for both. - Sibelius is a notation software. You will need to make an Avid account and download this on the computer. We will use it to write out our scores, and it has a playback function so we can listen. - MuseScore does not require an account and it is also a note imput software that will be used when we are writing our scores. I will screenshare with both of these

Ready to learn to write some music? All of us have music inside, and I will teach you how to let it out! Let's learn to read notes, write for different instruments, identify different musical styles, learn software (Sibelius, Logic Pro, Garage Band), and enjoy creating!

I've always been a musician and decided to further my education at Azusa Pacific Univeristy in Southern California and the University of Bristol in the U.K. I learned so many great musical skills from wonderful teachers, and I can't wait to share the knowledge to young learners.

Music is a vast world and I believe in taking all of the elements and combining them together. The magic in it is that all of the elements are both challenging and fun! The rewards in growing your musical skills show up in such gratifying ways, and all of us, no matter the age or skill level, are on the journey together.

A bit about me: I love traveling! I'm a big reader (my favorite books are by Jane Austen and the Harry Potter and Confessions of a Shopaholic series). I enjoy going on walks and spending time with my family.

I'm Tori! A composer from California.

- I worked for my BM in composition from Azusa Pacific University and learned many, many musical skills!

- At Azusa Pacific I wrote my first opera

- I worked for my masters across the pond at the University of Bristol in England (and wrote my second opera)

- Went on to London, a city I loved, and enjoyed that city and other European cities

- Always worked with kids as my mom was a preschool teacher (we even ran a preschool from home for a bit!)

- Currently I freelance as a composer and write all differnet styles - pop to classical!

- I love animals, watching movies, reading, singing, piano, and travelling.

- My approach to learning is to make it attainable, easy to remember, fun, and really communicating the value of the information because otherwise, what is the point of learning a certain topic?
