Class Experience

Welcome to Girl Empowered, an emotional intelligence group for students ages 8-11!

In this empowering virtual space, students will embark on an insightful adventure to understand and navigate the complex world of emotions. We will explore how to identify feelings, understand the emotions of others, and develop strong emotional coping skills. This journey is all about empowering students to confidently handle life's emotional rollercoasters, forge deeper connections with friends and family, and cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves.

Students will learn mindfulness techniques in every class, to help them feel centered and ready to push themselves out of their comfort zones. Students will learn skills, such as awareness of their emotions, recognizing what can and cannot be changed and identifying positive and negative self-talk. Optional, but recommended, homework in the form of journal prompts will be assigned weekly.

Each class will follow the same structure:

An icebreaker prompt.
Identifying emotions felt the past week.
A mindfulness moment, where students will listen to music and be given a mindfulness prompt or affirmation.
Skill Instruction.
Homework delivery: Journal Prompt.
Dismissal fun.

The following skills will be taught during each week:

Week 1: Identifying Emotions/Mixed Emotions
Week 2: Rational vs. Emotional Mind
Week 3: Anger/Frustration
Week 4: Sadness
Week 5: Grief and Self-Care
Week 6: Disappointment/Identifying What we can Change
Week 7: Embarrassment, Shame and Guilt
Week 8: Anxiety/Fear
Week 9: Nervousness/Shyness
Week 10: Stress and Pressure
Week 11: Happiness, Gratitude and Optimism
Week 12: Self-Talk
Week 13: Expressing vs. Suppressing Emotions and Goal Setting

In my experience teaching and coaching girls, I like to create a safe space for students to feel empowered to grow. I keep the conversation flowing, and I include and engage all students in the group. I model confidence through my teaching style and calm strength. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to work with students and to provide skills that will aid them on their limitless journeys!

Please note: This class is open to all learners, but will specifically benefit girl students.

Parental Guidance
Coaching and therapy serve different, distinct purposes. Coaching for children typically revolves around personal development, skill-building, and goal achievement, with a focus on enhancing a student's potential and capabilities. Coaches work to empower kids, fostering a positive mindset and encouraging them to take responsibility for their actions. In contrast, therapy for kids concentrates on addressing emotional and behavioral challenges. Therapists explore underlying issues, provide coping strategies, and promote mental health. Therapy is often more directive, involving interventions to help children navigate and overcome specific psychological difficulties. While coaching aims at maximizing potential, therapy for kids is geared towards emotional well-being and resolving issues that may hinder healthy development. If during our coaching groups I feel further mental health evaluation would be beneficial for your student, I will inform you immediately. If sensitive subject matter such as (but not limited to): clinically significant anxiety or depression, sexuality, drugs/alcohol, bullying or self-harm are brought up, I will not engage these conversations during class and I will send a message to you immediately after class.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have experience and training as both a therapist and a certified life coach. I specialize in working with girls and young women, empowering them to reach their goals and become confident leaders. Though I bring my experience and training as a therapist to my classes, I am not providing mental health therapy. Students will be taught skills to identify and manage their emotions, but we will not be discussing or processing their specific emotional issues in a therapeutic manner.
