Class Experience

Welcome to Girl Empowered: Social Skills Club, a safe space to practice social skills for students ages 8-12!

This is an ongoing group, JOIN ANYTIME! :)

In this empowering virtual space, students will be given the opportunity to practice social skills, learn to navigate friendships and to make wise decisions in social scenarios.

Students will learn mindfulness techniques in every class, to help them feel centered and ready to push themselves out of their comfort zones.

Each class, a social scenario prompt will be given. Students will have an opportunity to discuss how they would handle the situation including language they could use, challenges they may face, and outlining various options. I will facilitate the discussions, as well as give students opportunities (if they feel comfortable) to role-play scenarios with myself or other students.

Each class will follow the same structure:

*An icebreaker prompt (5 minutes)
*A mindfulness moment, where students will be given a mindfulness prompt or affirmation (5 minutes)
*Social scenario prompt given, followed by discussion and/or role-play (15 minutes)
*Dismissal fun. (5 minutes)

The following scenarios will be discussed in the first five weeks:

Week of February 26th: Joining a Group: Maya wants to play with a group of girls at recess but they're already engaged in a game. How can Maya approach the group and ask to join in a respectful and confident manner?

Week of March 4th: Handling Rejection: Emma invites her classmates to her birthday party, but her best friend Sophia says she can’t come. How should Emma respond, and what can she do to manage her feelings?

Week of March 11th: Resolving Misunderstandings: Lily overhears her friend Ava saying something that hurts her feelings. It turns out Ava’s words were taken out of context. How can Lily approach Ava to discuss how she felt and clear up the misunderstanding?

Week of March 18th: Offering Help: Olivia notices that her classmate, Hannah, is struggling with a math problem that she knows how to solve. How can Olivia offer her help without making Hannah feel bad?

Week of March 25th: Dealing with Peer Pressure: Sarah is at a sleepover where some girls start talking about watching a movie she knows her parents wouldn’t approve of. How can Sarah handle this situation while staying true to her family’s rules?

*Students are also welcome to message me with social scenarios they would like to discuss.*

In my experience teaching and coaching girls, I like to create a safe space for students to feel empowered to grow. I keep the conversation flowing, and I include and engage all students in the group. I model confidence through my teaching style and calm strength. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to work with students and to provide skills that will aid them on their limitless journeys!

Please note: This class is open to all learners, but will specifically benefit girl students.

Learning Needs
Neurodivergent and/or students with unique learning needs are welcome and encouraged to join! These skills are critical to help practice social skills in a safe environment. I am happy to cater instruction to the needs of the learners.
Parental Guidance
Coaching and therapy serve different, distinct purposes. Coaching for children typically revolves around personal development, skill-building, and goal achievement, with a focus on enhancing a student's potential and capabilities. Coaches work to empower kids, fostering a positive mindset and encouraging them to take responsibility for their actions. In contrast, therapy for kids concentrates on addressing emotional and behavioral challenges. Therapists explore underlying issues, provide coping strategies, and promote mental health. Therapy is often more directive, involving interventions to help children navigate and overcome specific psychological difficulties. While coaching aims at maximizing potential, therapy for kids is geared towards emotional well-being and resolving issues that may hinder healthy development. If during our coaching groups I feel further mental health evaluation would be beneficial for your student, I will inform you immediately. If sensitive subject matter such as (but not limited to): clinically significant anxiety or depression, sexuality, drugs/alcohol, or self-harm are brought up, I will not engage these conversations during class and I will send a message to you immediately after class.
