I am a working homeschool mom of two (both graduates). I have taught/tutored math and science for more than 25 years and have a Bachelor's of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Florida A&M University. I have a passion for helping students understand the why and how. As an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person), I excel in being able to connect with students who struggle and need a patient and supportive instructor. In my free time I love to knit, bowl, work logic puzzles and spend time with my family.
Testimonials:
"Yolanda has truly been an answer to prayer ....She is wise, knowledgeable, reliable and most importantly, effective. The support she has provided to our boys has been invaluable. They have learned and continue to learn to communicate in the "language" of math. She perseveres until the "light of understanding" begins to flicker. If presented with the same circumstances, I would make the same decision all over again." -Erica N.
"I like to feel confident in whatever I do so that I can perform at my best. I like to understand what I’m learning as well. Naturally, when it comes to school, this applies. I can perform my best in just about every subject on my own. All except math. Before I came to Mrs. Pugh, I had an average grade in math of about 70%. Yes it was passing, but no, I wouldn’t be getting into college with that grade. I knew that it wasn’t my best, and I didn't feel confident in that area of my academics. Fortunately, Mrs. Pugh also knew that this grade wasn’t my best either. I worked with her weekly and began to achieve grades and understanding I didn’t know I was capable of! For me, an 85% average was the best I was able to do for the longest time, but with Mrs. Pugh, my grade has jumped to a 92% average, IN MATH! And it’s not only that. She is very easy to talk to, and whenever there’s trouble, she listens carefully. She also works out every step, and we don’t pass a problem until I understand it fully. Whenever I get ready to work with Mrs. Pugh, I can always trust that she will bring out the best in me, and help me to gain confidence wherever there’s uncertainty. Most importantly, I know she cares about my success."
Naomi G., 10th grade, Homeschooler
"We have been working with Mrs. Pugh since last August of 2019 and she has been a life saver for 5 of our children, ages 7, 10, 11, 13 and 15. I have learned so much about myself as a homeschool parent, and teaching my children math was not a strength of mine for several reasons. Mrs. Pugh stepped into our lives, and has met each of our children at each of their levels, 1st grade math all the way to Algebra I and II and brings to our homeschool adventure the patience, understanding, and rigor for our children’s math experience we needed. She also gets to know the children’s personality, and considers the whole child when giving feedback on their progress. We are so thankful for Mrs. Pugh!" -Shayla G.
