What will be taught

This course will cover the fundamentals of nutrition for teens, including:

* The importance of nutrition
* The different types of nutrients
* How to create a healthy eating plan
* How to make healthy choices while eating out
* The impact of food marketing on teens
* The dangers of fad diets
* How to maintain a healthy weight
* How to deal with body image issues
* The importance of mindful eating

**How is your class structured?**

This course is designed to be flexible and self-paced, so you can learn at your own speed and on your own time. The course is divided into 12 weekly modules, each of which includes a video lesson, a quiz, and a worksheet. You can access the course materials online or download them to your computer or mobile device.

I will be using a variety of teaching methods in this course, including:

My teaching style is interactive and engaging. I believe that learning should be fun and relevant to your life, so I try to make my lessons as interesting and practical as possible. I also encourage students to ask questions and participate in discussions.

Lesson 1:
Digestion & Metabolism
 * Understand the process of digestion and its role in breaking down food.
* Describe the metabolic processes involved in converting food into energy. 
Lesson 2:
Macronutrients
 * Define and classify macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins).
* Describe the functions of macronutrients in the body. 
Lesson 3:
Micronutrients
 * Define and classify micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).
* Describe the functions of micronutrients in the body. 
Lesson 4:
How to Read a Food Label
 * Understand the information found on food labels.
* Use food labels to make informed food choices. 

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This course will be referring to the healthy eating guidelines established in the United States and Canada and will be inclusive to learners with different dietary needs. While the food guidelines are only "guidelines", it is not always suitable for everyone with certain food intolerances or those that different dietary protocols. Please let me know if your learner follows a specific dietary protocol. Students will learn how to read a food label as outlined by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Throughout this course, I will be briefly discussing kilojoules for learners that do not use calories in their country.

Meet the Team
Erin Madden, Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Erin Madden is the visionary founder and CEO of Happy Kids Nutrition Academy. With over a decade of experience in the nutrition and fitness industry, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Human Nutrition from Mount Saint Vincent University. Erin is passionate about the impact of nutrition on health and well-being, and her enthusiasm is infectious. Outside of leading the academy, Erin enjoys CrossFit, swimming, hiking, and exploring international cuisines, especially Thai food. She also has a soft spot for chocolate!

Randi Scherer, BS in Exercise Science and Nutrition
Randi is a dedicated educator with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition from Montclair State University. She is committed to empowering children to develop healthy eating habits and a lifelong relationship with wellness. Randi creates a fun, supportive learning environment that promotes physical, emotional, and mental growth, ensuring that every child feels valued and encouraged to make informed health choices.

Yue Li, RD, MSc AHN (c)
Yue Li is a passionate advocate for nutrition education and a registered dietitian with a Master’s degree in Applied Human Nutrition. Her extensive experience working with diverse age groups equips her to inspire healthy habits in children and adults alike. Yue believes that understanding nutrition is essential for overall well-being, and she is dedicated to empowering young minds with the skills to build positive relationships with food.

Christopher Sahota
As a Sports Coach and Educational Assistant, Chris plays a vital role in engaging students in physical fitness and nutrition. His background in adaptive sports allows him to create inclusive activities tailored to meet the needs of all learners. Chris is dedicated to providing motivational support that helps children develop important life skills.
