As a former elementary classroom teacher for 27 years, I am very passionate about teaching and enjoy sharing my excitement about learning! I love to teach children and take pleasure in getting them excited about their reading and learning. I am patient working with the children and know each child is unique and no two learners are alike. One student may learn quicker than a classmate but I believe all children have the potential to learn. I have high expectations for all students and I do not limit their learning. Encouragement of all my students to grow to their fullest potential thrives in my classes! I strive to help my learners to have a strong foundation in reading so they will never experience the struggles I went through as a child, with no phonics instruction. In my classes, the students are engaged in many activities to enhance and enjoy learning. In these classes, I will use screen sharing of interactive slides I have created. One of the slides will be a downloadable activity sheet the teacher and students will do together in class. In this ongoing beginning reading class, students will have hopefully had some exposure to the sounds of letters or have completed my CVC class with the short vowel sounds. It is NOT a requirement though. In this class, students learn the sounds associated with a few letters. Students will learn how to blend these sounds to read consonant, long vowel, consonant, and silent e words (CVCE). We will concentrate on one long vowel (CVCE) silent e family group in each class. The students will be involved in engaging activities and games throughout the class. ESL students are welcome! I have taught ESL students for many years in the classroom and online with students from Asia. First, the students will hear a story and be introduced to words in our word family. The students will use the pictures and other clues to help me find and say the words from our word family. Students will learn to sound the word out. In the next activity, the children will take turns identifying what each picture is. The students will have to signal with a thumb gesture if the picture has the same sounds heard in our word families. Next, the students will take turns to help to identify which letter they need to write to make the word that is on their downloadable activity sheet. If the student does not have this sheet, they can use a plain piece of paper to write the words. The teacher will teach the students the correct way to write their letters as they would learn in the regular classroom. In the next activity, the students will see how the words are spelled and we will identify the words that rhyme with our word family for the week. The children will repeat and read each word after the teacher says the words. We will read over just the rhyming words several times in a game starting with 2 words and building to 3 if we have time. We will complete a comprehension activity using all the words from the lesson in class if we have time. If we do not have time, the parents are able to do this activity with their learners outside of the class if they choose to. There are several new vocabulary words in each word family to expose and increase the student's vocabulary. If we have time, we work on the comprehension of the words they learned. While creating these lessons, I learned new vocabulary words in most of the lessons. This class is perfect for a child that isn’t reading yet but is ready and eager to learn. This class is also ideal for the learner who knows some sounds and words but needs to continue to reinforce and support a strong foundation for mastery in reading. No prior knowledge is needed to enroll in this ongoing class. These class sessions do not build upon one another so, therefore, no prior class is needed to enroll at any time. The following order below is what long vowel silent e (CVCE) word family we will start with. More lessons may get added after these 11 initial lessons. This class starts over after we have completed the cycle listed below. The students will receive a certificate of completion when they finish the 11-week class. These sessions were started in 2021 and continue to repeat once we get to the end of the cycle. Class 1: ___ame Class 2: ___ine Class 3: ___one Class 4: ___une, ule, ube Class 5: ___ate Class 6: ___ike Class 7:___ole Class 8: ___ake Class 9: ___ile Class 10: ___ave Class 11: ____ice Class 12: ____ite All students receive a colorful signed certificate of completion when they finish the course. ****I have written and/or created and own the copyrights to all the materials in these lessons. This includes the student activity sheets, stories written, and all the slides used in all of my classes.
