Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
As a former elementary classroom teacher for 27 years, I am very passionate about teaching and enjoy sharing my excitement about learning! I am a licensed, certified, and Tesol-certified teacher. I take pleasure in teaching and I am patient in working with the children. Each child is unique and no two learners are alike. One student may learn quicker than a classmate but I believe all children have the potential to learn. I have high expectations for all students and I do not limit their learning. I will encourage all my students to grow to their fullest potential! I love to teach children and get them excited about reading and their learning. I want to help my learners to have a strong foundation in reading so they will never experience the struggles I went through as a child, with no phonics instruction. I want to engage the learners in activities so they will enjoy learning for a lifetime.

This course will cover the sight words that students are yearly assessed on in their early elementary school years. In the primary grades, the students are expected to read and learn many sight words in each grade level. This is my first Sight Words course.
In these classes, I will use screen sharing of interactive slides I have created. Two of the slides will be downloadable activity sheets the teacher and students will do together in class. In the classroom post, I will weekly provide flashcards of the 5 sight words we will learn for the week. These will be extra resources if the parents would like to make them into flashcards as we used in public schools.

In the first activity, the students will each get to practice reading the 5 sight words that are used in sentences. There will be picture clues in every sentence. Each sight word will have several sentences as examples. If the child is able to read the words, I give them the opportunity to on their own. If the student needs help, I will assist them in the pronunciation of the words.
The second activity will be using the 5 sight words in a comprehension activity. The student has to help find the correct word to use in the sentences. This is one of the downloadable activity sheets that will be shared when enrolling in the class. The last activity will be to practice tracing and writing the 5 sight words for the week. The teacher will teach the students the correct way to write their letters as they would learn in the regular classroom. This is the second activity sheet that will be shared with the families. The students will be involved in engaging activities throughout the class. The teacher will provide flashcards weekly for the new 5 words. If the family does not have access to print the activity sheets, a plain piece of paper can be used for the tracing-writing activity.

This class is perfect for a child that can read some words and has had prior instruction with short vowels (CVC) and long vowels silent e (CVCe). This class is also perfect for the beginning reader who needs more practice reading and exposure to the required sight words for reading success. These class sessions do not build upon one another so, therefore, no prior class is needed to enroll at any time.
