Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Advanced Level
As a former elementary classroom teacher for 27 years, I am very passionate about teaching and enjoy sharing my excitement about learning! I am a licensed, certified, and Tesol-certified teacher. I take pleasure in teaching and I am patient in working with the children. Each child is unique and no two learners are alike. One student may learn quicker than a classmate but I believe all children have the potential to learn. I have high expectations for all students and I do not limit their learning. I will encourage all my students to grow to their fullest potential! I love to teach children and get them excited about reading and their learning. I want to help my learners to have a strong foundation in reading so they will never experience the struggles I went through as a child, with no phonics instruction. I want to engage the learners in activities so they will enjoy learning for a lifetime.

This course will cover level 3 sight words that students are yearly assessed on in elementary school years. In the primary grades, the students are expected to read and learn many sight words in each grade level. This is my second Sight Words course.
In these classes, I will use screen sharing of interactive slides I have created. One of the slides will be a downloadable activity sheet the teacher and students will do together in class. Flashcards of the 5 sight words are provided with the materials. These will be extra resources if the parents would like to make them into flashcards as we used in public schools.

In the first activity, the students will each get to practice reading the 5 sight words that are used in sentences. Twenty sentences are in each lesson and the children may read this many per class. There will be picture clues in every sentence. Each sight word will have several sentences as examples. If the child is able to read the words, I give them the opportunity to on their own. If the student needs help, I will assist them in the pronunciation of the words. The second activity will be using the 5 sight words in a comprehension activity. The student has to help find the correct word to use in the sentences. This is one of the downloadable activity sheets that will be shared when enrolling in the class. If the family does not have access to print the activity sheet, the child can still take part in the lesson.

This class is perfect for a child that can read some words and has had prior instruction with short vowels (CVC) and long vowels silent e (CVCe). This class is also perfect for the reader who needs more practice reading and exposure to the required sight words for reading success. These class sessions do not build upon one another so, therefore, no prior class is needed to enroll at any time.

****I have written and/or created and own the copyrights to all the materials in these lessons. This includes the student activity sheets and all the slides used in all of my classes.

Hello Parents and Caregivers!
I am very excited to be with Outschool and I would like to tell you a little about myself. I am honored that you took the time to read this information and are considering entrusting your learner in my classes. I taught in public schools for 27 years and for the last 3 years I have been teaching students ESL online all over the world. I am a certified and licensed teacher with a BS in Elementary Education and a concentration in early childhood. I taught all subjects in elementary classes K-6 but for more years in kindergarten-2nd grades. After I received my Master's Degree in Library Science and Information Skills, for the last 18 years in public education, I taught all grade levels from Preschool- 5th-grade. The students were taught reading and information skills, Internet Safety, and all about books. I checked out hundreds of books weekly while I was the media specialist-librarian.
I am certified and hold a TESOL Certificate from an International known school. I started working with English as Second Language (ESL) students when the university I attended allowed me to travel over a thousand miles to McAllen, Texas to do three weeks of student teaching in a bilingual school setting. I was able to teach many afterschool and summer programs with ESL students in the public school setting.
I am a patient and kind teacher and I love to praise and congratulate the students on all their successes in class. I endeavor to establish an atmosphere in my classroom that provides all students the following: they feel loved, and safe, and are with a teacher who sincerely cares about their education and learning. I have high expectations for all students. I do not put a lid on their learning and I try to take them as far as I can in my classes. I have witnessed many of my 3 and 4-year-olds after they complete my Preschool-Kindergarten Prep class, excel in their reading.
I love to teach children and share my passion for learning with these precious students. In my classes, the students will be involved in fun and engaging activities I have created and prepared. Whatever age group of children I am teaching, I try to instill in students a love for learning by creating an environment that is exciting and fun!
I have created the following classes with your children in mind! For a beginner reader who knows most letters and sounds, I recommend taking my ongoing courses in the following order starting with the first class below the Preschool and Kindergarten Preparation Class, unless this is the class you are looking for: (Feel free to copy and paste the class information below or you can go directly to the class links). I hope to see your child in one of my classes!

6. High-Frequency Sight words class (Level 1): In this class, the students do a lot of independent reading. We cover 5 of the 100 High-Frequency Sight words weekly. I do not do the reading for the students like in the Preschool & Kindergarten Preparation class. I try to let the strongest readers lead the sentences but I will help correct pronunciation and help with words if they need me to. This is a very popular class.
