Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 4
This is an introductory class to syllables. Syllables make up the foundation of the English language. Once a child can identify the 6 syllable types, the child's reading and spelling skills will improve. The student will be able to decode (read) and encode (spell) multi-syllabic words with ease. This class will give students a mini lecture on each type of syllable with a chance to identify words within each pattern. Students will learn about open, closed, silent e, vowel team, r-controlled, and consonant-le syllables. This class uses multi sensory techniques to help students remember the different syllable types. Each week the course will focus on one syllable type. The week's work will include a video to introduce the concept as well as isolated word activities or identifying the words in short reading passages. This course is aligned with Fundations and is helpful for struggling readers and spellers. It can also be beneficial for young children eager to improve their reading skills. Students should be able to read at a 1st grade level to understand the material in this course. Week 1 Closed Syllables Week 2 Open Syllables Week 3 Silent E Syllables Week 4 Vowel Team Syllables Week 5 R-Controlled Syllables Week 6 CLE Syllables

Hi, I specialize in teaching reading. It is my passion to introduce students to books and develop a love for reading in kids of all ages. I have a masters degree in education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a special education certificate in special education from Brooklyn College in New York City. I have worked as a peer tutor, as a test prep tutor, and as an Orton-Gillingham tutor, helping students overcome various reading difficulties to achieve their goals. I also worked as a reading teacher and a special education teacher at a title 1 charter school in NYC. I believe that every child has the potential to become an avid reader, we just have to ignite their passion and build their skills in an individualized way. I recently moved from NYC to live near the ocean. My hobbies include going to the beach, traveling, playing tennis, and or course READING!
