Class Experience
This is a class for learners who may be reluctant, or lack the experience, to cook independently in the kitchen. Some students find cooking to be a daunting task or are not sure where to begin. Others may be worried about using knives, open flame or the heat of the oven. In this class, we will go over basic kitchen utensils (such as knives, pots and pans) and appliances (such as stove and oven) while learning various skills to become independent at cooking three simple meals. Skills Taught in Class: 1. Cutting vegetables 2. Using the stovetop 3. Using the oven or a toaster oven 4. Using oven mitts 5. Kitchen Safety with washing hands, open flame, boiling liquids and a hot oven Meals: 1. Macaroni and Cheese (not from a package) 2. Chicken Noodle Soup (using some packaged ingredients and some fresh) 3. Eggs & French Toast Casserole 4. Tacos This class is inclusive of multi-ability levels and geared for students who may have sensory, executive function or fine motor challenges which may make them reluctant to cook in the kitchen. Written and visual ingredient lists will be posted in the classroom each week so learners can read and see what they will need. The class will have a series of short videos about kitchen safety, tools and appliances as well as longer videos that show how to prepare four different meals. Students are encouraged to use the videos, pausing when necessary, to make each meal. Once they complete their meal, posting a picture or short video of their completed meal is highly encouraged. Students may post questions, comments, feedback, and suggestions in the classroom and all learners are encouraged to respond. The teacher will also post weekly discussion posts and have students rate the meals in the classroom so we can all see how we like each recipe. ***Family Involvement: If your learner is able to use all of the tools without assistance, this is preferable for teaching independence, but families need to be available to help or guide their learners according to their unique needs. Accommodations may include buying precut vegetables. As with any cooking class, families need to understand the risks of cutting, working with a stove or oven, and using hot materials. Families will take responsibility for the safety of their learners while participating in class. Please reach out if you would like to discuss if this class is a good fit for your learner.**
