Don't Flip Your Lid; How to Recognize and Regulate Out of Control Emotions
Class experience
In this class, we will learn that we are made with feelings inside of us. We will talk about how some feelings make us feel good (thumbs up); some feelings make us feel bad (thumbs down); some make us feel in between (thumbs to the side); but that there are no good or bad feelings. We will learn about two parts of our brain - the thinking part and the feeling part - and how our thinking gets all mixed up when our feelings go bonkers. We will talk about what out of control feelings look like...
Children will learn that feelings are okay. Children will learn what happens to their ability to think clearly when their emotions are out of control. Children will learn tools that they can use to calm down and regulate their emotions. Children will learn how they can communicate their feelings to others.
I have received extensive training in Social Emotional Learning, Trauma Informed Care, Bullying Prevention and Expeditionary Learning (EL), over the past three years. I am passionate about social-emotional learning and believe it is the foundation of all education.
One or two pieces of plain (any color) paper Crayons, markers or colored pencils
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be given opportunity to share what causes them to "flip their lid" (lose control of their emotions). I give great attention during this time to ensure inappropriate content is not discussed. If something were to arise, I will immediately mute the student. Then I will address the class in a way that doesn't single out the student but yet they all know the student was not in trouble but rather the topic is one that is too sensitive for this setting. I will then advise all students to talk with another adult about such issues.
Welcome to my Outschool Page! Most people call me Miss Debbie. I'm a mom to three grown children; a wife to a fun and loving man; and a Grammy to a beautiful six-year-old granddaughter, a busy three-year-old grandson and a brand new granddaughter....
