US Grade 3 - 6
In this class, we will learn that we are made with feelings inside of us. We will talk about how some feelings make us feel good (thumbs up); some feelings make us feel bad (thumbs down); some make us feel in between (thumbs to the side); but that there are no good or bad feelings. We will learn about two parts of our brain - the thinking part and the feeling part - and how our thinking gets all mixed up when our feelings go bonkers. We will talk about what out of control feelings look like and how to sort them into manageable feelings. We will learn self-regulation tools that learners can use to calm themselves and bring their feelings back under control. We will learn ways that learners can communicate their feelings to others. I begin each of my classes with a greeting. During the greeting, each child will introduce themselves to the others in the class, by saying, "My name is ......" They will also be asked to share something, such as their favorite color. This is a very important part of my class because it immediately makes every learner know that they are an important part of the class. It also sets the foundation for trust and respect within the class. After our greeting time, we will jump right in with our lesson. I teach with what I call an interactive lecture style. I will teach information, tools, and skills but will also encourage learners to participate by practicing the skills I teach. Please note: This class is intended to teach learners tools that they can use. It is not a therapy class and should not be viewed as such. No previous experience or knowledge is necessary for children to take this class. Learners will need to bring plain paper and drawing/coloring utensils with them to class.
