In this ongoing discussion group, we will revisit the topics that we learned in “My Social Emotional Me: A Social Emotional Class for Lower Elementary Learners” and “My Social Emotional Me: Social Emotional Skills in Younger Elementary Children”. Learners will have an opportunity to strengthen and develop the skills they learned in the previous course, through: 1) Discussion among other learners 2) Practicing the tools learners were given in the previous class 3) Repetition...
1. Learners will improve their ability to focus and be engaged during conversations. 2. Learners will improve their ability to recognize and name their feelings. 3. Learners will improve their ability to manage their feelings. 4. Learners will continue to work on tools for resolving conflict with others. 5. Learners will continue to see, stand up and say something incidents that involve bullying. 8. Learners will improve their problem solving skills.
I have had extensive training in the area of Social Emotional Learning, including specialized areas of Growth Mindset, Bullying and Trauma Informed Care. Most of my training has come through CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), Second Step, Conscious Discipline, Deeper Learning, Colorado Shines and Early Childhood Investigations Webinars. I have taken this training and developed my own Social Emotional Curriculum for different age groups, ranging from ages 3-14.
This class does not have typical homework assigned. However, learners will be encouraged to practice the concepts discussed and incorporate them into their daily life. For example, learners will be encouraged to practice methods learned for managing their emotions; learners will be encouraged to practice techniques learned for focusing their attention. These will not be assigned homework tasks that will take additional time, outside of class, but rather practices that learners can do to improve their wellbeing. In addition, some learners may choose to do additional personal reflection activities, on their own. These will be provided but not required.
A notebook or journal Pen or pencil Crayons or colored pencils I will post notes in the classroom. These can be printed, if desired, but it is not mandatory.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No formal assessment will be given. Informal assessment will be made based on discussion and participation by learners and can be provided at parent request.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Please review the weekly topics of discussion carefully. We will have discussed each of these areas in our previous class but parents should be aware of topics they might not find age appropriate (e.g. bullying). I have had training to approach these subjects in age appropriate ways but do want parents to be aware. Parents are always welcome to sit (off camera), if you feel a subject matter might be sensitive for your learner. I recommend parents follow up with your learner, after each session. In addition, I will always contact individual parents if I ever sense a learner seems troubled by anything that is discussed.
I'm passionate about helping children see that they can change the world and it begins within themselves.
