Course Overview: This course is designed to introduce students to the foundational concepts of pre-algebra. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical application, students will develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and their relevance to real-world situations. Prerequisites: Students should have a solid grasp of basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication, as well as a familiarity with fractions. Course Outline: Week 1: Ratios and Proportions • Understanding ratios and proportions • Applying ratios and proportions to real-life scenarios (e.g., adjusting recipes) • Solving word problems involving ratios and proportions Week 2: Proportions (Continued) • Continued practice with solving word problems involving proportions Week 3: Percentages • Converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions • Calculating percentages of numbers Week 4: Percentages (Continued) • Applying percentages to real-world situations (e.g., calculating sales tax, discounts) • Solving word problems involving percentages Week 5: Prime Numbers and Prime Factorization • Identifying prime numbers • Finding prime factorization using factor trees and other methods Week 6: Greatest Common Factor (GCF) • Defining GCF • Finding GCF using prime factorization and the ladder method Week 7: Least Common Multiple (LCM) • Defining LCM • Finding LCM using the prime factorization and the ladder method Week 8: Word Problems with GCF and LCM • Solving word problems involving GCF and LCM (e.g., finding the greatest common divisor) Course Structure: • Homework: Students will receive weekly homework assignments. • Homework Submission: Students will upload their completed homework for review. • Question and Answer Sessions: The first 10 minutes of each class will be dedicated to addressing any questions or difficulties students may have encountered in their homework. • Additional Support: Students can email the instructor at any time for further assistance or clarification.
Learning Goals
Students will be solving word problems and understanding topics - Percentages, Ratio & Proportions, Prime Factorization, Factor tree, GCF and LCM.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Associate's Degree in Engineering (General) from THE INSTITUTION OF ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERS (IETE)
I’ve been teaching gifted students online and in our local homeschool co-op for the past three years. I’ve also taught computer science (Java, Artificial Intelligence) to college students for nearly a decade. My experience has taught me that a strong foundation is crucial for students’ success in middle and high school. My teaching approach emphasizes breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms and providing ample practice to reinforce learning.
