Welcome! What will this class cover? We tackle a fundamental pre-algebra concept every week. We will cover core pre-algebra concepts at a slower, discussion-based pace. Who is this class for? This math class is perfect for students preparing to enter pre-algebra within 6 months OR for students who are currently in pre-algebra and want extra support/review. Are there any required materials? Most weeks learners will be provided with an optional printable handout (posted on Sundays), and all weeks learners will need something to write with and something to write on. What is your teaching style? I act as the facilitator of learning rather than just the giver of information. The focus is on problem solving through discussion, and this works well with reluctant learners AND advanced learners! I give lots of examples and am interactive with learners. What is the schedule? Week 1 (Week of Feb 9) Fractions Week 2 (Week of Feb 16) Fractions Week 3 (Week of Feb 23) Properties of Numbers Week 4 (Week of Mar 2) Properties of Numbers ***SKIP week of March 9th "Spring Break"*** Week 5 (Week of Mar 16) Area with Variables Week 6 (Week of Mar 23) Percentages Week 7 (Week of Mar 30) Percentages Week 8 (Week of Apr 6) Mental Math More weeks will be added, though the day/time is subject to change. NOTE: Though we cover several pre-algebra concepts, this is not considered a full pre-algebra course. The concepts do not build upon one another, so feel free to join any time. More on my teaching style: My goals are to teach to the students' needs and encourage students while they learn these core concepts. I accomplish this through setting high expectations and making sure students feel seen and heard. Mistakes will be made, and that is okay! It is all part of the learning process. The method of teaching will be a mix of "I do, we do, you do" (which means I will be demonstrating the content first) and giving the students problems to try out on their own first. I often use questions to allow students to think critically without giving the answers away. I love student-to-student interaction and will be incorporating it as much as possible through online discussions. That looks like giving students the opportunity to share their thought processes and answers.
