Coming Out of Your Shell - A Social Group for Special Needs Children
What's included
1 live meeting
50 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
This is a class for special needs children lead by an autistic adult. I wasn't lucky enough to be diagnosed as a child but a group like this that gave me a chance to talk to other kids like me would have been amazing for me growing up and I am excited to be able to give that opportunity to others. Students will participate in conversations with their peers. I will encourage them to talk about their special interests and get to know one another. I will also provide games for the children to play together and help guide their conversation when needed. This social group is student lead in order to allow students to discuss their interests. We will start each week with a chance to share what you have been doing lately. I will then get the conversation started with fun disscusion questions. Questions will vary but may include: What is your favorite color? What is a color you don't like? Do you have any pets? What kind of pets would you like to have? What is your favorite game and why? If you could go anywhere in the world where would you want to go? We will also have a game or activity each week, these may include: Simon Says Freeze Dance Animal Dance Party Would you rather? Two truthes and a lie Mad Libs Sectuty Gaurd Lights Out Show and Tell Try not to laugh Animal Charades Never have I ever Because this class student lead, it is a great way for children to make friends and build social skills. Students with all levels of verbal ability are welcome but students who do not have a way to communicate over video chat will likely not get much from the group. If you have any concerns please contact me and I will try my best to ensure your child can participate in whatever form of communication they use. If your student needs any accommodations please let me know and we will work together to ensure the best possible class experience.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am autistic myself and have spent the last 10 years of my life working with autistic children as well as children with other disabilities in various capacities. I have been a pre-school teacher, a teacher's aid working one on one and small groups with children who need extra help, a tutor, an in-home caregiver for a child with severe disabilities, and a community support worker for autistic tweens and teens. I also have an associate's degree in special education.
In January 2020 I began leading social groups for autistic children on Outschool and now have many different age groups and options ranging from ages 3-18. I also teach several classes about autism and sensory issues all of which have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents and students alike. I have spent a lot of time learning about autism and how autistic tend to view the issues that will be discussed in this class. If you have any questions or concerns about my qualifications please message me or read the reviews of some of my others classes.
