This is the first of a series of one time classes that will go over the concepts taught in a semester-long course. The classes in this series are geared towards students who are entering high school or who have taken the required math courses for chemistry. Please reach out to me if you have any questions. This class can be used to strengthen the concepts being taught at home. Otherwise, it would be best to take these classes in order. In this class, students will learn how to define chemistry and matter. They will learn what makes up the matter and learn about the different types of matter. They will also learn how to relate the properties of matter to its structure. Students will also be able to identify what an element is and discuss how mixtures and substances are different. Students learn how to distinguish among elements, compounds, and different types of mixtures (homogeneous and heterogeneous) This class longer so we can incorporate practice into the lesson. I usually do not assign homework. Please let me know if you would like homework for your student. I will teach the new material, and then gauge the student's understanding by asking questions and playing games. Students are free to ask questions or make comments throughout the class. If there is an opportunity to demonstrate a concept, I will do my best to do so in class.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to define what chemistry is. They will also be able to define and discuss matter and all its forms.
