Chemistry Tutoring a Crash Course

Tutoring for High School Chemistry. The entire standard high school chemistry curriculum if desired. Each ace-to-face will include a plethora of anecdotal stories showing how chemistry is indeed the central science.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 11
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Tutoring is driven more by the learner needs than by my vast experience in the chemistry and sciences landscape. I have taught and tutored from elementary school level in NJ to freshman level at both Penn State and UVA. I have tutored SAT preparation for high school chemistry in VA. I even worked one summer at ETS writing test questions for the SAT. I've been around the chemistry landscape. I'm a great conversationalist and the learner will find I drift off the original topic from time to time. I call them life lesson sidebars. I can accommodate you in terms of how often, what day of week, what time of day, etc. I have a flexible schedule and an fine with long or short term scheduling. whatever is entered into the Outschol availability in this listing is simply to fulfill a requirement. My actual tutoring availability is wide open.
Learning Goals
The learner will become well-versed in the periodic table of elements as in my methodology that table is he starting point for everything useful in high school and college freshman chemistry. There are no aspects in either high school or freshmen college-level chemistry that I would have difficulty explaining/teaching in multiple ways. I like hands-on and when practical would mix "doing" with instructional approach. For example , I taught the entire SAT prep class for high school students 1 on 1 using baking soda and vinegar as the only two chemicals for the entire course. The standard chemistry curriculum covers, matter at a macroscopic scale, matter at the atomic level, the periodic table, compounds, balanced formulas and reactions, conservation of mass and energy, and important figures (people) in the history of chemistry. A learner that comes with a clean slate and wants the full tour will master at a minimum these themes.

Theme 1 - the different phases of matter and their changes from one state to another. Properties of solids, liquids and gases and the different ways we measure quantities of each. This will include balances., graduated cylinders and other high school use equipment.
Theme 2 - The periodic table. We will review the shape and form of the table itself and how rows and columns differentiate element properties, bonding, compound formulas and properties. The table is also the single most convenient source for atomic numerical data used to compute masses needed later in chemical reactions and mass balancing.
Theme 3 - Chemical transformations. The learner will understand how reactants on the left hand side of a reaction are changed into products on the right hand side of the reaction AND how balancing to preserve conservation of matter laws may be accomplished. Chemical reactions are typically either exothermic or endothermic. Some simple to do hands on experiments with ingredients found in most homes can safely be used to demonstrate.
Theme 4 - Tour of the Periodic Table key elements and compounds in terms of importance to man, technology and the environment. Why do steel nails rust, but stainless steel cutlery remain like new? Why are some people having their bodies or their brains frozen in liquid nitrogen? An element story. Learner will be expected to pick and element and write a fictional story using the element in proper context while at the same time writing a fictional story that is engaging. I will share such an example from a 4th grade boy that was published in the Materials Research Society trade journal "The Bulletin. "

Learning Needs
I have a granddaughter with dyslexia that attended a special "only dyslexia" private high school in Richmond , VA. I am quite familiar with adaptive teaching and learning. I did several volunteer classes at that school.
Parental Guidance
If the learner has a high school chemistry text or downloaded source they are following I am happy to follow that format and supplement as needed. Generally the student steers the direction, but I am also fine with a clean slate and a student that follows my lead instead of taking the lead. I can cover the entire standard high school chemistry curriculum given learner availability for several months of once a week hourly face-to-face investment.
Pre-Requisites
I would assume the learner has completed physical science and biology; but neither is critical. We just start each theme from different reference point.

I have BS degree in Chemistry from SUNY at Albany and PhD in Physical Chemistry from Penn State. I was employed for long time at Bell Labs; the research division of the once Bell System. When telephone service was a nationally regulated monopoly. I have patents, authored a book, published a plethora of papers. I retried early because I WANTED to teach elementary school and try a "hands on" no textbook method of teaching both science and math to K - 6 grade learners. It was extremely successful. Although such an approach is hard to disperse to other schools where elementary school teachers are so textbook oriented. Many schools (indeed most schools) simply don't have the budgets for a "stuff" approach. Anyway, your learner will be fully engaged and look forward to the 1 on 1 engagement and learning.
