This is a placement class to determine the best course for struggling readers. The Barton Reading & Spelling Program is for students who struggle with spelling when writing stories, and cannot easily sound out unknown words when reading. In this session, the teacher will screen the student to see if they have the phonemic awareness needed to begin with the Barton Reading & Spelling System. After the screening, the teacher will suggest the best course for the student. Some students will...
Students will complete three tasks during the screening. These include counting words, counting syllables, and comparing three sounds with tiles. These three tasks will determine the best placement and level of phonemic awareness the student has. Students who do not pass the screen will be referred to Foundations in Sounds and students who do pass the screening will be referred to the Barton Reading & Spelling System.
Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a specialization in Reading/Language Arts
A laptop or computer with a mouse in order to move the digital tiles. A headset with mic to hear the sounds and words in the assessment.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will provide a photo of the screening assessment form and suggestion for reading remediation at the end of the session.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
