Barton Reading & Spelling System Screening

This is a placement class to determine the best course for struggling readers. The Barton Reading & Spelling Program is for students who struggle with spelling when writing stories, and cannot easily sound out unknown words when reading.  In this session, the teacher will screen the student to see if they have the phonemic awareness needed to begin with the Barton Reading & Spelling System.  After the screening, the teacher will suggest the best course for the student.  Some students will need to begin with the Foundation in Sounds program and other students will begin in Level 1, 2, or 3 of the Barton Reading & Spelling program.  It is important that the student have a laptop or computer with a mouse so they can remotely move the digital tiles.  A headset and mic are also necessary for the most accurate screening.  
For the Barton Reading & Spelling Program students should:
Be at least 5 years old and in kindergarten
Speak and comprehend spoken English
This is not for children with a receptive or expressive language disorder.
This is also not an ESL program.
A non-native English speaker must be able to speak and understand spoken English at a second grade level.
