What's included

30 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Has your little one mastered the alphabet song and the sounds our letters make? Does your child enjoy coloring, music, and interactive games? Is your learner ready for a challenge that will help them transition through those first steps of reading? This engaging class is the perfect combination of energetic and educational! Your young reader will be excited to jump into this new learning adventure and make new friends who are just starting out with reading and writing. We will explore the basics of phonemic and phonological awareness, using stimulating learning tools and resources to become comfortable with sounding out letters and building them into words. Ms. Cubby will lead the class, beginning with a get-to-know-you question that usually focuses on a topic that will establish our word themes for the day (e.g., "What is your favorite animal/food/song/color?"). Then, we will play some fun games to warm up our minds and bodies. These games, such as "What Animal Am I?" and "Alphabet Ball" will provide opportunities to sound out and visualize our letters so we can begin the word-building process. After shaking out some energy, we will sit down and practice writing a letter (worksheets will be provided), Ms. Cubby carefully explaining the rules and spacing on our special writing paper. After writing, we will play a speed drawing game where students will draw an object or animal associated with the letter we wrote. After taking turns showing our creations, we will then spell and write a three- or four-letter word associated with the letter we just illustrated (e.g, ant, ball, cake). Vowel digraphs and "silent e" will be lightly introduced in some instances. Interactive spelling and word-building songs will be sprinkled throughout the class, changing up from time to time to keep learners engaged and in good spirits! Week of 7/12: Animal words like cat, dog, rat, bug Week of 7/19: Food words like bun, ham, pie Week of 7/26: Outside words like car, bus, road Week of 8/2: Play words like ball, run, play
