Homework
1-2 hours per week. Each lesson will provide a PDF download containing a hands-on activity or printable related to the pirate theme, integrating reading, math, science, and problem-solving. While there won't be any formal assessment for these tasks, students are encouraged to engage with them to enhance their unit study experience. Additionally, a set of journaling pages will be available for students to illustrate and write about their learnings. These pages are optional but aim to enrich the learners' experience.
Certificate of Completion
If desired, a certificate of completion will be provided at the end of the course.

Ahoy, young buccaneers! Uncover the world of pirates! Join this self-paced unit study on pirates and set sail for an adventure-filled learning journey. Dive into 5 pre-recorded lessons packed with vibrant pictures, engaging videos, and exciting games. Each lesson is designed to make learning as thrilling as a treasure hunt. Get hands-on with homework activities and capture your thoughts with optional journaling pages. Perfect for all aspiring pirates eager to discover the high seas from the comfort of home!

This class will consist of five short and easy lessons. They are filled with engaging pictures and videos, with the material being taught by me in video format. Each lesson will also conclude with an interactive game. Everything is contained within slide shows in Canva, which students can access with a view-only link. No sign-in or account creation is required and no other websites are needed.

Also included in this class are homework suggestions to fully engage and immerse learners. They will receive a PDF download with each lesson that includes a hands-on activity and/or printable. A set of journaling pages about our topic will also be provided. These are meant to aid students in creating their own personalized learning notebook, thereby enriching their understanding of the subject.

This unit study is designed to be completed over the course of two weeks, but students will have all the materials available and can move through it at their own pace. I will also be available to answer questions and give guidance as needed.

Syllabus

5 Lessons
over 2 Weeks
Lesson 1:
History of Pirates
 In this lesson we will discuss the history of pirates, including some of the earliest origins as well as the "Golden Age of Piracy" when they were the most active. Instructions for an activity where students can design their own pirate flags will also be included. 
Lesson 2:
Famous Pirates
 In this lesson we will cover some of the most famous pirates including Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, Black Bart, and Ching Shih. Learners will also have the opportunity to complete a pirate treasure money math activity as part of their homework. 
Lesson 3:
Pirate Ships
 In this lesson we will learn all about pirate ships, from the different types that they preferred to the parts of the ship and how they were used. Students will also receive instructions for a "build your own pirate ship" activity. 
Lesson 4:
Pirate Crew + Life as a Pirate
 In this lesson we will discuss some of the different roles sailors had within a pirate crew and why they were important. We will also learn a little bit more about the daily life of a pirate. A pirate themed creative writing activity will be included as well.

The lessons for this class are hosted on Canva (an Outschool approved resource) as slideshows. Students will receive a view-only link for each one - there is no sign-in or account creation required.
