Homework
1-2 hours per week. Each lesson will provide a PDF download containing a hands-on activity or printable related to the ice cream theme, integrating reading, math, science, and problem-solving. While there won't be any formal assessment for these tasks, students are encouraged to engage with them to enhance their unit study experience. Additionally, a set of journaling pages will be available for students to illustrate and write about their learnings. These pages are optional but aim to enrich the learners' experience.

With 5 pre-recorded lessons, you'll scoop up knowledge on the history of ice cream, uncover the secrets of how it's made, and get the scoop on the science that makes it so deliciously smooth. But that's not all! I’ve churned out some hands-on activities and journaling pages to sprinkle your learning with fun. Discover fascinating fun facts and become a mini-expert on everyone's favorite frozen treat. Whether you're a homeschooling family or just looking to add a dash of learning to your summer, this unit study is sure to delight learners. Let's make learning sweet!

This class will consist of five short and easy lessons. They are filled with engaging pictures and videos, with the material being taught by me in video format. Each lesson will also conclude with an interactive game. Everything is contained within slide shows in Canva, which students can access with a view-only link. No sign-in or account creation is required and no other websites are needed.

Also included in this class are homework suggestions to fully engage and immerse learners. They will receive a PDF download with each lesson that includes a hands-on activity and/or printable. A set of journaling pages about our topic will also be provided. These are meant to aid students in creating their own personalized learning notebook, thereby enriching their understanding of the subject.

This unit study is designed to be completed over the course of two weeks, but students will have all the materials available and can move through it at their own pace. I will also be available to answer questions and give guidance as needed.
Learning Goals
Learners will explore the fascinating journey of this beloved dessert, from its ancient origins to its modern-day variations. Through engaging lessons and hands-on activities, students will delve into the different methods of ice cream production, from traditional hand-churning techniques to advanced industrial processes. They will also uncover the chemistry involved in creating the perfect texture and flavor, understanding how ingredients like sugar, milk, and cream interact at a molecular level.

Lesson 1:
History of Ice Cream
 In this lesson, we will discuss the history of ice cream from ancient times all the way up through modern day manufacturing. A printable ice cream themed CVC words activity will also be provided. 
Lesson 2:
How is Ice Cream Made?
 In this lesson we will cover the entire process ice cream goes through before it makes it to the freezer section, and learn some of the science behind processes like pasteurization and homogenization. Students will also have the opportunity to complete a "how ice cream is made" sequencing activity as part of their homework. 
Lesson 3:
Ice Cream Science
 In this lesson we will learn some of the scientific principles behind how ice cream is made. We will also discuss a simple way to make ice cream at home, and why the addition of salt is needed to create a temperature low enough for the mixture to freeze. Instructions for an at home ice cream in a bag experiment will be provided as well. 
Lesson 4:
Types of Ice Cream
 In this lesson we will go over some of the most popular and innovative variations of ice cream. We will learn about the history behind them and how they are made. A printable ice cream logic puzzle activity will also be provided.

Parental Guidance
The lessons for this class are hosted on Canva (an Outschool approved resource) as slideshows. Students will receive a view-only link for each one - there is no sign-in or account creation required.
