Homework
1-2 hours per week. Each lesson will provide a PDF download containing a hands-on activity or printable related to the volcano theme, integrating reading, math, science, and problem-solving. While there won't be any formal assessment for these tasks, students are encouraged to engage with them to enhance their unit study experience. Additionally, a set of journaling pages will be available for students to illustrate and write about their learnings. These pages are optional but aim to enrich the learners' experience.

Dive into the explosive world of volcanoes with this self-paced unit study! This engaging course is perfect for young explorers eager to learn about the fiery giants of our planet. With 5 pre-recorded lessons, I’ll take you on a journey through the formation of volcanoes, the different types you can find around the world, their impact throughout history, and how scientists study them. Each lesson is packed with real-life pictures and videos to bring the wonders of volcanoes right into your home. Plus, with hands-on activities and journaling pages, learners can deepen their understanding and keep track of all the fascinating facts they discover. Get ready to erupt with knowledge and excitement!

This class will consist of five short and easy lessons. They are filled with engaging pictures and videos, with the material being taught by me in video format. Each lesson will also conclude with an interactive game. Everything is contained within slide shows in Canva, which students can access with a view-only link. No sign-in or account creation is required and no other websites are needed.

Also included in this class are homework suggestions to fully engage and immerse learners. They will receive a PDF download with each lesson that includes a hands-on activity and/or printable. A set of journaling pages about our topic will also be provided. These are meant to aid students in creating their own personalized learning notebook, thereby enriching their understanding of the subject.

This unit study is designed to be completed over the course of two weeks, but students will have all the materials available and can move through it at their own pace. I will also be available to answer questions and give guidance as needed.
Learning Goals
Students will delve into the nature of volcanoes, exploring their formation, eruption causes, and more. The course will cover historical volcanic events, present-day active volcanoes, and the scientists dedicated to their study. By the course's conclusion, students will have a comprehensive grasp of volcanoes and their environmental influence.

Lesson 1:
What are Volcanoes? + How are Volcanoes Formed? + Why do Volcanoes Erupt?
 In this lesson we will go over what volcanoes are, some of the ways they are formed, and why they erupt. Learners will also be able to engage in a volcano themed rhyming words activity as part of their homework. 
Lesson 2:
Types of Volcanoes
 In this lesson we will discuss the three major types of volcanoes, as well as one of the geological phenomena that can occur after eruptions. A printable types of volcanoes sorting activity will be provided as well. 
Lesson 3:
Volcanoes Throughout History
 In this lesson we will learn about some of the most famous and impactful volcanic eruptions throughout history. This includes Mount Vesuvius, Mount Tambora, Krakatoa, and Mount St. Helens. Instructions for a model volcano experiment that can be done at home will also be provided. 
Lesson 4:
Active Volcanoes
 In this lesson we will cover a few of the volcanoes that are the most active today, including Stromboli, Sakurajima, Kilauea, and Masaya. We will discuss the Ring of Fire as well. Students will also have the opportunity to play a "floor is lava" math game at home with the provided printables.

The lessons for this class are hosted on Canva (an Outschool approved resource) as slideshows. Students will receive a view-only link for each one - there is no sign-in or account creation required.
