How I Will Teach Each class meeting will begin with a brief introduction to the concept being explored. Students will be placed in small groups to engage in an exploration and/or application activity. Through instructor guidance, all students will leave class with a completed activity. Topics: Algebraic expressions Solving linear and quadratic equations and inequalities Solving systems of equations and inequalities Graphing linear and quadratic functions Slope and rate of change Writing the equation of a line Writing the equation of a parabola Schedule: Week of 9/27: Slope and Rate of Change Week of 10/4 Writing the equation of a line. Week of 10/11: Applications of Linear Equations Week of 10/18: Solving a system of linear equations. Students are given a brief review of the topic then guided through an activity. Teaching Style: My teaching style is highly Socratic. I aim to pose questions and induce student-inquiry. Lectures are interactive and inquiry-guided. For example, a typical lecture will start with a question. While student will not necessarily be able to answer it, the question will motivate the big ideas that will be presented. The inquiry serves as an anchor and gives us a common point to which we may return.
Learning Goals
Learning Goals:
Students will be able to do at least one of the following by the end of the session.
1. Simplify algebraic expressions
2. Solve linear and quadratic equations
3. Solve application problems using algebraic methods
4. Factor, add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials.
5. Graph lines, identify intercepts and slope.
6. Write linear equations given two points, or one point and slope.
7. Solve a system of two linear equations or inequalities and interpret the solution graphically and algebraically.
8. Solve a system of quadratic and linear equations or inequalities and interpret the solution graphically and algebraically.

My name is Joshua Lewis and I teach everybody's favorite subject - Mathematics! I have been teaching math for over 20 years - from 6th grade to university-level courses. I hold a Master of Science degree in mathematics from the University of California with many units beyond that - because I am crazy about math! For the past 15 years I have served as a professor of mathematics at the college level.
